I should probably shove it into a script but it's something like `find -type f -print0 | xargs -0 -P8 -n100 md5sum | awk '{a[$1] = a[$1] "\t" $2;c[$1]++}END{for(i in c){if(c[i] > 1)print i, c[i], a[i]}}'. -

> Fucking uncanny.
In this case, the excuse was they trained it on Reddit data.
> It's like all the AI bot "girlfriend" apps, how many lonely people that would use an app like that would also be susceptible to the app waiting a couple weeks and popping out with "You're a fat loser wit zits, even a phone robot girl couldn't ever love you. You should just end it, you're worthless."
Ha, I also expect that a large number of them would be very into it.

> I can appreciate the meta level of it, but it fails as a gimmick for the non movie nerd crowd.
I also think James Joyce was a douchebag, so your mileage may vary.
I liked Rubber, I hated The Dead Don't Die. The difference is that Rubber was still an attempt to entertain, while The Dead Don't Die was Jarmusch committing a crime to film as a way to pay for a party he threw.
You do have to pick a lane, though, if pastiche has too many levels of foot-shooting but you think it is possible to not punch Jarmusch over The Dead Don't Die.
Jack Lemmon said that the second a comedian thinks he's doing something funny, he stops being funny. Generalizing this gets you a can of Raid to spray Jarmusch with. "Teehee, I'm going to be meta!" You can do "meta" and still make something worth watching, he just didn't. Maybe he can't; Tarantino can't.
> Coffee and Cigs is not a coherent movie, it's not intended to be.
This part is fine.
> It's loosely constructed memes to highlight musicians.
That part is fine. I was bored. I also don't think he does enough with light to warrant putting things in black and white. Pi did: Pi was visually interesting. He's also doing it like he shot it in color and then turned it black and white with a filter; the old episodes of the Twilight Zone, when they used the good film--I don't know what the good film was, I have not understood the mechanics--some of them looked striking. It's hard to describe, but they don't look like they're on a flat screen, they seem to pop out. Jarmusch has put it in black and white for no reason I can discern, though.
I think I have hit my limit for shitting on something people appear to love so I don't wanna. I begin to feel like a terrible person. -

> I haven't seem mouth of madness since it came out, and at the time i took it as sincere. But then it failed with the reveal.
I heard "Carpenter decided to poke some fun at his friend and Stephen King decided it sounded funny and joined in" and I immediately downloaded a car. I liked it.
> It's totally valid that it lived on as a meta spoof with stupid monsters.
Well, I don't think "Haha, cheesy movie, I enjoy it ironically" is an opinion worth defending, so that's not what I'm saying. I saw that and thought "Ha, tons of suspense and then a transition to way too many things happening to care about any of them, and finally a stupid reveal. He really *did* become the Stephen King." -

> But i'd need you to expound your beef.
I can't see the whole thread (tech.lgbt accounts) but I was tagged in during the Jarmusch discussion.
> I'm not giving him a total pass,
The only zombie movie that actually made me angry was "The Dead Don't Die" and I shut it off. Dickhead got the studio to fund him drinking with famous people for a few weeks and that's fine but instead of containing the excrement, he served it on a plate to real humans with a sneer.
I did not care much for Coffee and Cigarettes; I'm convinced that Dead Man might have only been saved by Johnny Depp and that the emperor might have no clothes. I'd have to rewatch it. Even Johnny Depp couldn't save his terrible divorce from eating his finances, though; the one man that I thought was immune to movies that exist to pay the rent ended up making Transcendence.
Platoon is still on my list but I'm now wary of it.
> wes anderson
Wes Anderson made one movie ten times. It was a good movie but I've seen it. -

> Fight Club was also written by a gay man.
This was my point, yes.
> The point is that the authors were making fun of the very people that admire the characters in these films.
Ah, okay. I mean, I try to avoid taking idiots' into consideration: anyone that can't see that the movie was satire doesn't have an opinion worth discussing. That's not elitism, it's just that there are plenty of idiots all over the earth and they're numerous and loud and everyone's heard everything they have to say. -

Not that acting like a lunatic will make you an artist (although in the case of Jarmusch and many others, acting like a lunatic can convince people that you are doing art), but that people creating amazing things are usually also lunatics. -
pistolero (p@fsebugoutzone.org)'s status on Monday, 30-Sep-2024 16:08:04 JST pistolero @teratology @dcc @jesu @kasdeya @kitsunecafe @lispi314 @miscbrains I think it's only funny if you think that matters much in terms of mass appeal; Fight Club was also wildly popular.
Good artists tend to be up to wacky shit. William S. Burroughs and Hunter S. Thompson and Philip K. Dick, people like that, they basically just monetized the degeneracy, and the world is a better place for it. So musicians overdosing and actors pulling their dicks out and authors being completely unable to write a book while sober and that kind of thing, like...do you want art or not? You kick out the degenerates and you get people that can act normal, and people that can act normal are either normal people (and probably make shitty art) or they're psychopaths (and tend more towards sadism and power games than good, old-fashioned buggery). (The exception to this rule is, of course, child actors. That guy that pulled his dick out at Shirley Temple should have been dragged into the street and shot, and it is to this city's shame that he wasn't, but it is a small comfort that she just started laughing uncontrollably and left the room when this made him angry.)
People at the extreme end of any endeavor are like that. Hamming said that the problem with Bell Labs was that AT&T shifted hiring policy for researchers: the researchers were in charge of hiring, and this moved to the business guys that didn't understand the research, and he said that a lot of researchers are off-putting. I forget the exact quote (I will canbearsed to extract the clip from his lecture at some point) but it was something like, "Someone with novel ideas about physics will also often have novel ideas about appropriate behavior or personal hygiene." So, you want good code, you need to let the guy that looks like the dude from Falling Down arrange his pencils, the guy in the hoodie that never shows up before lunch, the whole programming socks crowd; you are going to waste some talent when you fire someone for making fart noises during a presentation by HR on acting normal. (My old boss told me a story about Yahoo's "naked sysadmin". He would just strip naked and work directly in the machine room, with the desert-level humidity and deafening fans and his dick out. The compromise was that he worked at night when no one else was there and any company recognition of the nudity was to remain completely unofficial: "don't ask, don't tell, don't get caught".)
All the people doing interesting things are weird fuckers. You just need to rope off the "weird fucker zones" and not let the normies into them. This industry turned to shit when they started saying "You can't sleep under your desk, I don't care how interested you are in the problem."

> They are anything but the pinnacle of prose, but honestly a good chunk of his books were very addictive reads.
John Carpenter did a better Stephen King than Stephen King. I will fight anyone.
