Not in the preachy sense, not a moral proscription, but A Clockwork Orange is a guy working out some ideas about the nature of free will (and the part that Kubrick left on the floor, destruction as a petty/juvenile activity that people grow out of, even if they live in a shitty society), Catch-22 is about the absurdity of war, and The Crying of Lot 49 is Pynchon trying to make you watch him jack off. (I hear Gravity's Rainbow is better but I liked only one page of Lot 49 and I don't wanna comb through to find it but it's the conversation in the bar.)
I had a conversation with @jesu and he mentioned that Kubrick's movies were generally better than the books he used and I immediately thought of "The Shining" and said that anyone that can turn a Stephen King novel into something good is clearly a genius, but I will say that A Clockwork Orange is an exception. There's no way to really do a 1:1 translation of 250 pages of words into 2 hours of people running around talking so it's not really that Kubrick failed at anything (it was still a really good movie) but it's really hard to touch Burgess.- † top dog :pedomustdie: likes this.

Pff. Narration is considered gauche because hacks use it; this doesn't mean that every use of it is bad writing. It worked in that movie.
> Aside from the UK ban of the movie entirely-
Of course, they had to: the movie was about "the European Union is Hitler II". :alex:

The best you can hope from Stephen King is "well, it didn't physically *hurt*".

I recently got the latest and fanciest version of the movie and re-watched it after not having seen it in near 20 years. It's amazing how my friend group memes from the movie flowed naturally back into my brain. And we are gen X- so the movie was ancient news for us at the time. Other than the lingering transgressive aura it still had, Blue Velvet was probably more in the forefront of edgy and adult things to try and sneak a viewing of. That or straight porn.
In the modern era, it suffers from the over reliance on narration- and some of the back projection scenes driving in the car are especially cheesy looking- but I have to imagine they were somewhat comical even then. Aside from the UK ban of the movie entirely- there were clearly humorous bits of the movie to temper the nastiness.
The shining book isn't bad... But goddamn the movie is top tier. It's one of the ones that if i run across it randomly playing on a station, i'll probably get sucked in and watch the whole thing. 2001 is the same.
Room 237 is worth a watch for shining movie fans. It goes... way too far off the deep end- but i love that the movie can generate that interest. -

The general topic was art and soullessness and stealing; Kubrick was used as an example of a guy that was making original works of art despite often adapting novels. So A Clockwork Orange and 2001 and The Shining were mentioned because they're adaptations of novels.† top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

Good artists tend to be up to wacky shit. William S. Burroughs and Hunter S. Thompson and Philip K. Dick, people like that, they basically just monetized the degeneracy, and the world is a better place for it. So musicians overdosing and actors pulling their dicks out and authors being completely unable to write a book while sober and that kind of thing, like...do you want art or not? You kick out the degenerates and you get people that can act normal, and people that can act normal are either normal people (and probably make shitty art) or they're psychopaths (and tend more towards sadism and power games than good, old-fashioned buggery). (The exception to this rule is, of course, child actors. That guy that pulled his dick out at Shirley Temple should have been dragged into the street and shot, and it is to this city's shame that he wasn't, but it is a small comfort that she just started laughing uncontrollably and left the room when this made him angry.)
People at the extreme end of any endeavor are like that. Hamming said that the problem with Bell Labs was that AT&T shifted hiring policy for researchers: the researchers were in charge of hiring, and this moved to the business guys that didn't understand the research, and he said that a lot of researchers are off-putting. I forget the exact quote (I will canbearsed to extract the clip from his lecture at some point) but it was something like, "Someone with novel ideas about physics will also often have novel ideas about appropriate behavior or personal hygiene." So, you want good code, you need to let the guy that looks like the dude from Falling Down arrange his pencils, the guy in the hoodie that never shows up before lunch, the whole programming socks crowd; you are going to waste some talent when you fire someone for making fart noises during a presentation by HR on acting normal. (My old boss told me a story about Yahoo's "naked sysadmin". He would just strip naked and work directly in the machine room, with the desert-level humidity and deafening fans and his dick out. The compromise was that he worked at night when no one else was there and any company recognition of the nudity was to remain completely unofficial: "don't ask, don't tell, don't get caught".)
All the people doing interesting things are weird fuckers. You just need to rope off the "weird fucker zones" and not let the normies into them. This industry turned to shit when they started saying "You can't sleep under your desk, I don't care how interested you are in the problem."

Ah, okay. I mean, I try to avoid taking idiots' into consideration: anyone that can't see that the movie was satire doesn't have an opinion worth discussing.
