@thatguyoverthere there are several studies that suggest various beneficial effects on the brain anatomy. i assume they compared groups of treated people with groups who received placebos, as is usually done in these cases. some of the studies i found after a quick Google search were animal studies but not all. there seems to be general agreement among the specialists that this occurs, in various ways.

@thatguyoverthere with developmental disorders, early intervention can improve outcomes drastically. when there are drugs that can change those outcomes that you could potentially quit once you're an adult, this is further amplified.

i wonder if acting in your own best interest is something you learn from your parents, or are some people just naturally better at it than others?

seeing as i have ADHD and people who have that tend to have self control issues, and the trait is highly inheritable, i assume there's a large genetic component to it.

the urge to do stuff i shouldn't is often overpowering. it's usually nothing crazy but i definitely shoot myself in the foot a lot.

i probably wouldn't have a single serious financial or health problem today if it weren't for this inability to control urges, and this tendency to get overpowered by emotion, both of which belong to the broader category of self regulation, which happens in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, and is of course an ADHD symptom.

it's a bit like having an adult mind but your repertoire of action is that of a disobedient child. and it doesn't go away. you don't grow out of it.

in cases where people who take ADHD meds as kids quit them as adults: studies have found that the medications actually cause changes in the brain. giving Ritalin to a child actually has a permanent effect since it affects a brain that is growing. i guess the brain sort of adapts to it and then it becomes permanent.

@thatguyoverthere @proedie ah, most of the political conflicts that you guys have about medicine and science never caught on here. they're considered apolitical.

i've noticed something about democracy in other countries than the Nordic ones: some voters seem almost naive. they carry the banner of their chosen candidate and say stuff like "he will save our country". it's typically working class people with no education, and they seem kind of desperate.

i read an article about Turkey that had voters like that adoring Erdoğan. but i've heard Americans naively swoon over presidential candidates too.

i suspect it's a result of having a poor and uneducated population.

@proedie i don't know what people are thinking but they most decidedly don't put their political colours on display. it's usually impossible to tell who people are voting for without talking to them.

@drtifftaft there seems to be some connection between objecting to what the scientific establishment says and being republican, in the US.

the current strategy of the opposing side seems a bit counterproductive. ridiculing the criticism and calling them fools.

i'm not sure this would work, but maybe as a surprise counterattack, admit mistakes, but then destroy them anyway?
