@thatguyoverthere @icedquinn @tyil we have all these subsidies and customs barriers in place to make it possible to even competitively produce food in Norway. in terms of the free market, what would make more sense is to just import everything from abroad.

@thatguyoverthere @icedquinn @tyil there might be a difference between farmer's markets in the city vs farmer's markets in the countryside. i'd have to go by train to check. but if i buy from the supermarket, that stuff is subsidised. the chains aren't paying the real cost.

@thatguyoverthere @icedquinn @tyil difficult to buy local when you live in the middle of a city. there are farmer's markets but they know to charge a premium for that. the gentry pays extra for "genuine" and "organic" stuff.

lots of perfectly edible fruit and veg is discarded because customers don't wanna buy ugly ones

i thought EU regulations for egg expiration dates were only a little stricter than necessary, but as it turns out, there's a dramatic difference:

the EU rules say to set an expiration date 28 days after roosting.

Norwegian egg manufacturers say that ours are actually good for up to 4 months.

reason for the difference?

most of the world struggles with salmonella in their eggs. Norway does not, so our eggs last a lot longer.

i had no idea the difference was so drastic. i can basically add about 2-3 months to the expiration date and still be safe.

i had plans of pickling eggs to preserve them for longer, but there isn't much practical need to do that when they can be kept for months anyway, so it would be more of a flavour thing in that case...

the only way i could write a novel would be if they locked me up and all i had in there was a typewriter. i'd have to be very bored and deprived of all other distractions, basically. the Internet and its short feedback loop isn't doing me any favours there.

@coolboymew but he seems to understand what real art is because he expressed admiration for Garfield Without Garfield and i believe he even worked with its creator to release it officially

@coolboymew the way he works these days is that he draws a rough sketch of the comic and his army of assistants finish the job

@coolboymew he doesn't take himself very seriously at all - and if you look into the early history of Garfield, he was originally drawing a comic strip with characters that looked like humanoid ants and such and the publishers didn't believe in it, so he went back to the drawing board to "create a more marketable character" - he runs a business and he's not ashamed of it

@coolboymew one time, when Jim Davis was asked what to do if you run out of ideas, he said "just lower your standards"

@coolboymew having watched a documentary about Jim Davis, his answer would probably be a goofy joke

the documentary had a bit where the creative process was demonstrated and they basically did this shtick where they acted like idiots.

@coolboymew lasagna is such a weird food for a cat to like - it's full of wheat and tomatoes and cats are obligate carnivores
