@gabriel somewhat grimly, this WOULD save on pension costs for the government...

so, in several countries in Western Europe, there's a debate going on about the ageing population and increasing the age of retirement.

is anything like that going on in any US states?

i'm asking about the state-level because i'm finding that individual American states can have a lot in common with how we do things in much of Western Europe, even if no such things exist on the federal level.

the other day, i spoke to an American and they described their state's system for unemployment and sick leave benefits and it was very similar to Norway's or Scandinavia's.

@caekislove that explanation is emotionally satisfying if you dislike environmentalists, but too simple to be the truth.

surprisingly often, i'll hear some line of argument about a world issue that would only be correct if America is the only country in the world.

another straw man argument

the environmentalists usually dislike both electric cars AND Bitcoin mining, so this comic just made up an imaginary unreasonable person to criticise.

saw one earlier where the unreasonable person was against tattoos for kids but for gender change surgery (both being types of body modification), whereas a more realistic person would be either for or against both, typically.

it's funny how "admit" and "admit" are the same word in English

but you also admit an applicant to college

those aren't the same thing at all. we use different words for those in Norwegian, for example.

somebody actually cited a rule as a reason for a block. you don't see this very often, which is sad. most of the time, the reason just seems to be "i don't like you", so god help the users on that instance.

religiously wash your hands. no matter how clean you think they are. wash them anyway. we learned the hard way.
