I am seeing way too many NATO apparatchiks talking about Ukraine, like they talk about Korea and Cyprus - as a frozen 100 year conflict. As in NO ceasefire, a declared eternal war, but no combat.
At the same time, on the Ukraine side, the head of defense and Zelensky admin said

Unspoken: "...to be a thorn in Russias side forever." NATO realized it CANNOT win, CANNOT even maintain the war, so as a consolation prize they want a permanent war on Russias border. They wont seek a ceasefire or a peace deal because that would legitimize Russian holdings, and take diplomatic pressure off them. So they will just scale back combat and see if Russians do as well....

But the industrial base will be shot so they wont be able to deal with insurgency, and any slip up or mistake that frags civilians will increase animosity towards the state. This will be the period of open combat between rebels and federal faction, and the age of warlords popping up between. -

The balkanization model was possible because of the small size of the region. America is much larger, all of the balkan civil war conflict can disappear in the city of New York. So will it be burrough against burrough?
The model doesnt fit size wise. Even the Spanish Civil War model is too small, Florida alone would account for it. And the population is WAY too informed and fractionated across different ideologies, there were only 4-5 ideologies at war in the Balkans and Spain. In America there would be a thousand.
When it goes, it will go in a way that nothing ever has in human history. -

@Shadowman311 Humans have a inbuilt disgust reaction to incest, tied to the face (and minimally to scent). The only two ways I know it can be countered is if the people grow apart, or if they cant see the face.
I also know AI has trouble identifuing blacks because their faces lack the counter-shading which is seen easily on white faces. This is also why blacks have a more communal idea of identity.

Cold war ends, Ukraine and Russia sign a treaty where Russian forces can remain in Crimea in exchange for gas.

Bush admin debates to expand NATO. Many war hawks and boomers argue against it (George Canon) but the intelligence agencies convince Clinton it would be cheap and safe.

NATO begins to expand with hard power in Balkans and soft power influence ops in former Soviet union. Initially its very cheap for us due to the economic imbalance, a major politician costs just a few hundred thousand dollars, a minor one - tens of thusands.

First tranche of expansions, Poland, Hungary, Czech republic are absorbed by NATO. Russia protests diplomatically, but is mostly just caught off guard, as the upper echelons of their politics are controlled by CIA advisors.
