They fled Norway to escape Christianization. The priest was in all ways a chieftain first and a priest second, but it was a theocracy. The man with the most clout was the leader. Just because he was a local warlord doesn't mean he was just "appointed" by their grace and they could just 'unelect' him at will. They would have to overthrow him legally and usually by force because he wasn't going to just go quietly into the night. If his force of men were bigger and better than the guy with the grievance, well let's just say they lost that court case real quick when steel was drawn.

I really think Iceland is a very poor representation of libertarianism 'done right' unless you just like local warlords who eventually Christianize, which I'm personally fine with over what we have in the West today. We may be talking past each other because your definition of libertarianism might just be 'limited monarchies'.

They would meet at the Althing annually for disputes and amendments to the laws. The (I think 39 but this number is pulled from memory) goðar had to attend (does this sound like a society without laws to you?) and one out of nine of his freemen had to attend as well or pay him a tax. This system was written about in the Gragar (I'm not putting the umlauts in there, too lazy) and has extensive online resources to read more. Keep in mind the Icelanders were as homogenous as you could possibly be as Scandinavians fleeing Christian Norway to start an island settlement in the far North. So this 'libertarian' dreamscape "worked" (if we ignore all the sagas of outlawry and violence in Medieval Scandinavia) because for the most part everyone was rowing the boat in the same direction. We can't get Christians to agree on a basic premise such as 'dancing is ok or devilry' or 'have a glass of wine is ok or a sin' and you want lolbertarianism in a land mass like the US? It will never happen. It didn't even work in Iceland and eventually they were ruled by a konung.

Without taxes money even money without usury coalesces into the hands of the few. Read War Cycles, Peace Cycles by Richard Hoskins. The entire book is on the evils of usury but even that book says taxes are necessary. Norse society had slaves called thralls and freemen as far back as the melting of the ice caps. Your entire premise is false and your worldview of harmony through being left alone doesn't work in the natural world. Hierarchy works, in the end it's the only thing that works. Libertarianism can exist for very short stints of time in highly homogenized areas but will always always fall to a monarchy with power. The keyword is power, you either have it or you are a slave to it. There is no middle ground. There are a lot of things to like about the Norse ways, I could give you lots of examples where I would base a new society in the ashes of this rotten one upon it, but the ideal that they all just left each other alone on their farmsteads is myopic at best and outright lying at worst. The Norse fought over land and resources and trod the earth under their mighty shoes to secure it from all peoples. They were traders, raiders and wise, but they were warriors and hierarchal to the extreme.
