7666i remember when i was really fucking young (like 10) figuring out that picking the GEP gun at the start of deus ex was objectively the best choice because you don't get that thing until the lebedev mission whereas the tranq dart gun and the sniper can both just be found on liberty island
@arcana@sun anybody remember when some porkbun customer rep thought the getgle girl (male) was child porn and took the whole site down

7666>let's fire people! >oh wait we need some of them, let's hire them back quickly >they ask for a raise, we can't say no because they know we need them >some don't come back anyway or found better positions in the private sector >now the remaining employees have to pull overtime hours to keep shit from falling apart >they get time and a half pay for overtime >we're paying more for less >cost savings!!!
@theorytoe i think a lot of it is shit because of technical debt, not because it's actually shit.
when you deal with 50+ years of legacy systems that keep people from getting killed, "eliminating technical debt" isn't going to win you any additional favors or budget. it's not flashy, and it's hard to quantify.
wanna see a little bit of what goes into these systems? i got a job offer from these guys a looooong time ago to build some of this stuff that i turned down (good decision in hindsight!)
this is needed because sometimes i get 100+ files reported to remove in a batch and they can span multiple 10TB mounted directories based on when the files were uploaded, so this guy, when run on the parent /mnt directory, descends into all of the mounts and zaps the files when found for me, all i have to do is rmq file1.mp4, rmq file2.jpg, etc.
this took 5 minutes to make and yet i procrastinated doing it for the past many months

7666why is it that people on warthunder get arrested and charged for releasing government docs to prove their points but elon dumps NOFORN data on an already hacked website to do the same thing and it's "teehees" all the way down

7666i think recent events have solidified my long standing view that while government is supposed to be the ideal body to set standards and drive global change and initiatives, realistically it will be perverted by those who want nothing to do with governing because elected leaders currently acquire their "legitimate" power from a subjugated and incompetent voter base
This means most likely those they vote for are also subjugated and incompetent and the actually intelligent experts and engineers and admin workers in the trenches who got their job through merit instead of a paid marketing campaign never get the final say or authority to drive meaningful change, which we're seeing the results of now - the complete erosion of trust in these institutions to be immune to hostile outside influence or dramatic policy changes that undo years of hard work.
when you look at a country like China, where authoritarian policies and principles ensure national unity and a single cohesive vision, all these issues magically vanish and progress (whatever that may end up being) is ensured. china's principles and doctrine have remained consistent for years and years, so even if they're a thorny geopolitical partner at least they don't whipsaw every election cycle. if I was some tiny burgeoning nation looking for foreign aid to support growth and raising living standards I'd be going to them for support. if only we could have that same concept without the whole paranoid party politics and internal subterfuge nonsense where nobody wants to speak out without risk of being disappeared (and lmao social credit score). I don't want commie garbage but is this current situation really any better?
i want the government dismantled for completely different reasons than the average smoothbrain it seems - i just don't think elected leadership oversight of government departments works at all anymore. when you get sycophants and incompetents elected to the top positions by a captive government, the shit just rolls downhill and nobody below them has a realistic chance of changing their mind. and before you go "elon wasn't elected!!!" yeah but he got his authority delegated by someone elected and look at where that's getting us now.
@divVerent@kravietz@samueljohnson >run ssh scanbot on all IPs announced by an ASN >generate thousands of lines of logs on anything listening >ask for log lines to be removed under GDPR >network operator tells you to fuck off >sue for damages >rinse and repeat
