Santa Noodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 12-Feb-2023 02:45:22 JST Santa Noodle ☦️ Went to the store to buy a basic cheapo clip-on lamp for my desk. All of them have been replaced by more expensive models with permanent built in LED bulbs. Reviews say they start to fail within as little as two weeks. 😢 -

The funny thing is that built in LED's SHOULD be better as they have the entire fixture to place components and dissipate heat but they lower the quality so bad they fail fast
that being said we have a number of clip on LED reading lights, some dating back to 2018 that work great, only one failed and that was because my SON ripped it apart and lost half of it before I could solder it together again -

Now they’re cramming it in planes and it’s even WORSE, because garmin shit has kept the same general flow for stuff for the last 30 years. Lots have developed muscle memory to be able to multitask and spin in waypoints without looking, and that’s all going out the window for…….well we certainly arent’ getting more screen real estate out of it. Gen 1/2 G1000’s had these same size screens so……

This. Bought a touch blender for my ma after her push button one gave up the ghost. Things touch panel fried in a month and I had to buy her an older push button one off eBay.
Still works. -

I'd assume you could get a lot more out of a kit for less money? -
Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks (washedoutgundampilot@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 12-Feb-2023 04:22:46 JST Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks @BowsacNoodle @captainmarvelfan1 Most do, most companies even issue you ipads with the stuff installed. If you’re smart you bring your own gyro ADSb if you’re flying GA or older stuff since avionics vary so much.
But they aren’t certified, legally if you’re flying in low visibility you’re supposed to be relying on whatever’s installed in the panel in front of you. Even if that’s not what you’re doing all the time, you have to pretend it is.
The new avionics are nice in most ways though, they aren’t nearly as prone to overheat like the ipads are. Those things, sitting in the sun at max brightness in a non-ac plane are very quick to shut down altogether

Santa Noodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 12-Feb-2023 04:27:52 JST Santa Noodle ☦️ @WashedOutGundamPilot @captainmarvelfan1 I never thought about overheating, but that's a good point. I wonder if anyone has cracked one open to fix that yet? Maybe a small fan sitting on the mobo even. -

There are super expensive mounts that put on fants behind them but they don’t change the ipad’s strucutre, and that’s what’s horrible about it.
We’re stuck with them because the big app started on apple and has never gone away, there are alts now but boeing bought out the big one so it’s kind of the standard today.

So now lazy owners are just installing this single tiny thing to integrate your alt/speed/attitude that’s ALSO the only way to see your engine gauges. It’s so retarded
But hey, it looks fancy, and it must have worked if they were able to sell it to somebody

It's like I know intuitvely where everything is, and can manipulate a switch or toggle without even needing to take my eys off the road. -
Santa Noodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 12-Feb-2023 04:35:49 JST Santa Noodle ☦️ @Bro-Drillard @WashedOutGundamPilot @captainmarvelfan1 Physical buttons also fail, but can often be replaced. I never understood Garmin either. I still have a super old GPS that takes a while to sync but gets reception in cities and other places that you wouldn't expect. All the new ones are fast but way less accurate. -
BroDrillard (bro-drillard@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 12-Feb-2023 04:35:49 JST BroDrillard @BowsacNoodle @WashedOutGundamPilot @captainmarvelfan1 Physical buttons also give you tactile feedback, telling you that your input action was successful even when you're not looking. That's BS. Physical buttons cost money and they want to keep that as profit.
As to Garmin, I never understood why they are so stingy with screen sizes on their products. Screens are not an expensive items any more, and smaller screens, esp with touch buttons are really bad for usability. -
Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks (washedoutgundampilot@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 12-Feb-2023 04:36:43 JST Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks @BowsacNoodle @Bro-Drillard @captainmarvelfan1 I’ve never heard of a panel button failing on any of their avionics, and I’ve flown some very, VERY old stuff of theirs.
People don’t give garmin credit for their strength in designing menu flows. It takes some time but it makes more sense than anyone else. Most others are really quite bad. Guess that’s the side effect of old guys designing menu flows

People always make fun of me if I put on gloves for the walk around but if it’s something I have to drain I’d rather be called a nerd than spray avgas all over my hands and continue on for 6 hours without being able to wash them. Not to mention oil. Niggers will just check the sticks, check the sumps, and hop right in to touch everything like they stepped out of the garage. It’s nasty.

Volatile chemicals are just that. It's not about being afraid to get messy so much as not being an ignorant fool. Sort of off topic but brake cleaner absorbs through the skin. Even worse the piston engine avgas is leaded. Turboprops and jets use kerosene, but the GA guys are the ones pissing it out to make sure the guy pumping gas didn’t give them the wrong kind

Freqs on one side, with quick swap buttons, zoom buttons, wedding cake knobs, direct button, all the stuff you need at hand. The touch replacement is at least okay, but I don’t really feel like the extra 1/4” of screen is worth it when I have a tablet with a much better moving map anyways.
The funny replacement they’ve been selling a bunch of is this skinny little thing. A lot of the small aircraft grabbed it to meet the 2020 mandate, and garmin figured they could cram in a moving map there. Kinda nifty….but more backup than primary.
Note that the slot on its right is an SD card, IIRC

It’s just absolutely disgusting to see how many people NEVER clean the yokes/joysticks, they let every knob develop that halo of scum over years. Everything just feels nasty to the touch, and that matters when you’re spending hours just sitting there holding it.
Not to mention when you’re tending the plane to a client.
“Hey man! Great pick buying this sweet, sweet ride, you’re gonna love her! Anyways, here’s the nastiest truck stop bathroom of a cockpit you’ve ever seen, oh let me grab my piss bottle wedge under the seat……”
I had to do a stopover nearby before meeting once because I couldn’t bring myself to let the new owner see his dream plane like that.
