   Of course nobody mentions the history of the term, it’s far too cool and politically unpalatable today, but to my memory the guy literally saw the rhythm of the wag and thought

   “damn…..just like those cute blonde girls roller skating around the Netherlands, one cheek lifts, the other descends…..just lovely.

   How about we call this something besides ‘classically damped oscillation/yaw’ and something with a bit more spice, like…..uh…dutch roll? Tell them it’s something to do with sports or something. Not buttcheeks.”

     Wish I could find the source. I recall reading it in an old book from the 60’s to 80’s. Now when I look it up it’s cope about “speed skaters” and the design of dutch ships in the age of sail.

     I’m not convinced at all, the guys doing test pilot work back in the good ol’ days didn’t care about that stuff, they were too cool for that.

     @GabeLakmann yaw is the motion around the vertical axis, so any ‘wagging’ motion is yaw, which can end up in a repeating oscillation depending on the plane’s design. Lots of thought goes into making something fit for purpose. for most civ aircraft you want something nice and easy, so they tend to balance out pretty easy.

     The only time I can think of experiencing full on dutch roll is in a very long-winged, skinny plane built for speed like the Meridian. It would just go from one end to the other until you have it a quick stab of rudder to end the cycle

     I thought yaw was when you used the rudder instead of ailerons to change the attitude of the plane? In the picture it's hard for me to see any yaw.

     I remember studying this stuff when I was around 8 years old and playing flight sims, I remember yaw, pitch, and roll (I thought I did anyways haha) but I know you have so much more practice with this than I've even thought about. I guess I got yaw confused with something else.
     
     What would it be called when the plane is level and you apply rudder to do something like "crabwalking" during a landing? I guess you could call it clockwise or counterclockwise changes along the y-axis but what is the term for it? The pictures are kinda hard to understand since they're 2d.

     @GabeLakmann TBH unless I”m having to use the info it gets very stale and I just go by feel. You can tell when the plane’s doing something funky, most of the time you unsonsciously cancel out oscillations anyways.

     The only guys who are REALLY up on the aerodynamics are former test pilot guys or CFIs who’ve been teaching in the last couple years. Everyone else has more shit to study, and nobody in corporate checkrides cares if you can sketch out all 500 aerodynamic forces in the 73, they wanna see you do the hydraulics or fuel systems since that’s the stuff you need to understand in order to fix something in the air (without getting greased)

     Pitch is nose up/nose down, roll is tipping the wings up or down, and isn't yaw what I'm thinking where you kick the rudder one way or the other and rotate the plane clockwise or counterwise around an imaginary y-axis line through the planes center of gravity?
     
     Speaking of that type of stuff, I read about Captain "Sully" last night and was impressed with what I read.
     
     He's German/Swiss and it seems like so many of the best pilots have been German, German lineage, or from the surrounding area.

     @GabeLakmann I have a kind of mixed vibe w/ sully because dealing w/ guys like him is iffy sometimes. He’s a lifelong safety guy, brought up in the nasty years of the industry, so he really, REALLY takes it seriously. That’s good and bad, good in that he’s the kind of guy who helps you really polish your skills, knows a LOT that he can impart to you….

     but bad in that I wouldn’t wanna work more than one trip with him in about a month. He’s the kind of guy who will sit there and say “are you…..listening to music? when he sees your cable routing, then lecture you when you’re at cruise and opening up your laptop instead of scanning the instruments back and forth for 8 hours.

     Great in a pinch….not fun to hang out with though. I like the guys who do both

     @GabeLakmann Worst of both worlds is when someone sucks ass at flying but REALLY thinks he can make up for it by citing regulations and procedures all the time. He’s the guy who’ll backseat drive on speed limits, company guidelines, but then ignore them when his poor planning bites him in the ass and he doesn’t want the shame of admitting he screwed up

     I see what you're saying. Guys like him would be helpful if they were allowed to run airlines and make sure they're not cheaping out on stuff but you're probably right, half the time you'd be learning awesome stuff from him and the other half on eggshells wondering if he is going to make a big deal out of something that isn't a major issue.

     @GabeLakmann Sully would be - and to my knowledge is - a good chief pilot guy. Too many of them are more HR nerds and suck ups than actual pilots. A good Chief has the skill and experience to sift bullshit whining and pointless complaints from actual SoF issues. Not everything is always cut and dry, so it helps when you got someone who’s judicious.

     I just really have enmity with the guys who lean into the stuff like “company says we’re not allowed to read or be distracted during cruise, you shouldn’t be listening to podcasts or anything”. Hell, there are guys who will sit there and read the only “approved” literature - company manuals as if that’s better.

     Some guys are just really autistic, they really get into this 100% perfect pilot routine, it’s like they enjoy the hardship and boredom because it proves they’re a REAL aviator

     I hate those types in all jobs. They'll usually hit middle management and plateau since they don't have any real skills except kissing ass.
     
     I wish there was a way to know who was flying the plane and how they act before boarding but with the new diversification I imagine you'd have some mostly empty flights at times.

     That's kinda funny. A lot of the times podcasts don't really distract you anyways since it's kinda running in the background of your mind. I'd be worried about people falling asleep or making some other mistake because they're just sitting there thinking deeply about something since they don't have music or whatever to keep them going.
     
     Obviously you don't want people going too crazy with it but if you're doing more routine work it seems like you do better if you have music or something to keep you zoned in on the job and not what's going on with your home life and such.

     Ah, I didn't know it was like that, I figured you'd have one ear for comms and the other for music or whatever and it wasn't integrated. That's cool to know and if comms and the aircraft signals take priority on the system then there isn't as much issue with it.

     Oh, and they got rid of audio-in in favor of…..USB type c. Cool, rechargable shit. And the case is even BIGGER. NICE! Hell yeah, I was thinking “man this headset would be better, if only it was bulkier, harder to charge, bluetooth only, AND heavier!” and they really delivered

     @ShtPoastAnon @GabeLakmann Yeah I was actually really surprised. I asked my buddy, who’d been leaving after his contract was up (w/ some contentious circumstances) and he said they never told him to turn his gear in so I just did the same. All they had to do was ask, but they weren’t really good at saving money anyways. I heard they tried to uber a part like, 10 hrs away by car once because nobody in the company wanted to make the drive to where the plane sat.

     Who makes the grey or light green headsets that used to be really popular? If you saw a picture of them you'd probably recognize them.
