I’ve been using both and I feel more comfortable making quick posts on Bluesky while I feel more comfortable making longer posts on fedi. Might be the post limits though.

As for why people are flocking to Bluesky? Two things IMO:

1. Friends - people want to talk to their friends, never mind if the service has less features. It’s why Twitter is still around despite Elon constantly making it a toxic place to use, and the general audience moving away from Twitter seems to like Bluesky. Maybe it’s the familiarity of it as well.
2. The audience on the fediverse making average users feel unwelcome. There was a post about Bluesky users being asked why they don’t want to join fedi and some of the reasons include having to abide by unwritten rules that weren’t a thing on the instance they were on, or feeling restricted as if they were posting on LinkedIn rather than the Twitter they once knew. Add to that the very extreme sides of the fediverse and I can see why people would rather join Bluesky, despite the lack of features.

While I think the API side of things are better (everyone has to follow the Mastodon API here even when Mastodon lacks some features, whereas Bluesky’s API is basically near the same as Atproto’s), I definitely think they’re talking about the community more than anything. Things are a lot looser on Bluesky. There might also be some preconceived notions from negative experiences, too. Someone I know said that they hated Mastodon’s deck UI. Don’t know when that was but in any case it falls back into that.

But rather someone who recently followed me boosted two posts of mine: one about my interests (with the intention of networking with others) and one asking for Linux laptop suggestions for my friend. I kinda feel bad since my friend has since already picked but I’m getting a lot of good suggestions nonetheless.

Yeah exactly. If only fediverse was as easily indexed as Reddit was, it’d be of more help than 99% of Reddit nowadays.

If you want to introduce less technically-inclined friends to the fediverse, don’t overload them with information about how the fediverse works.

Simply tell them to find a community they like, or better yet, if you know what they’re into find an appropriate instance for them, and also tell them not to worry about anything else. The way fediverse works is better shown rather than explained.

For example, I recommended squawk.social to a friend of mine with a birdsona, and he said he’ll consider signing up.

holy shit. I’m going to a company that’s been reputable for a while now (been on PCPartPicker’s UK site for years) and I did a check of the Trustpilot reviews. I don’t know if Trustpilot reviews can be easily faked or not but I’ve had to check something because Reddit wasn’t helping.

Building would be objectively cheaper and more fun than having someone else build it for you, but there are reasons why not, and mental health is honestly the big reason for me.

And sure, building a PC is like Lego, if Lego had a bunch of tiny pins, wires, circuits, transistors, capacitors and diodes that can be broken and cause hardware issues at any moment. It’s absolutely fine for people to seek a pre-built or have someone build it on their behalf if they desire, and I wish the hobby snobs of Reddit would say that.

Honestly that’s really dangerous for those looking for a more privacy-centric option. Mastodon should follow what the others are doing to an extent, including with stuff like this. They should know better being the branded face of the fediverse.

And even then, attempts at privacy sometimes just break. Remember Twitter Circles and how it broke during the era of Musky Twitter? Thing basically made circle-restricted tweets public, or at least unlisted. If people were using this as a more private option, then they were essentially screwed.

I don’t get his point. If he didn’t want his posts being scraped by Universodon, there’s the option to make the posts unlisted (shouldn’t appear on their federated timelines), followers only or even direct.

I get he’s distressed but the dude needs to chill.

Tempted to buy an Intel Arc GPU for GPU passthrough. I don’t need a strong one, just something to run Windows 11 well.

COVID is just not that much of a threat anymore. Besides, I’d rather get COVID than have to deal with the mental problems from restrictions. I feel like mental health has been very much ignored during the lockdowns.
