We can only change this if we get rid of the toxic "fediblock" culture around fedi and make it as painless as possible for users to migrate away their posts and media from their instance to another.
The first is very unlikely to happen. Turns out, making a thousand more centralized servers (which is the closer model to the #fediverse we have today) just produces a thousand people who will most likely just act as feudal lords than disinterested janitors who's just there to clean away universally-agreed upon definitions of junk. Why just be a boring moderator who does a thankless task of keeping the instance usable when you can get that dopamine instigating a smear campaign against someone you don't like by intentionally taking their words out of context or provoking them to do their worst for everyone to see (instead of you know, just leaving them alone)?
The second though, is something in the works right now for #ActivityPub. #Firefish based software like #Iceshrimp, as well as the latest #Misskey fork #Sharkey allow you to import your posts from other fediverse servers, though it shouldn't be considered 100% ready for everyone's usage every like 5 seconds just yet. It has its own problems right now I heard, like no way for direct messages to get migrated, or each old post imported now having to be refederated to many instances.
@ace@toot.lgbt well.. No. It is a #fediverse server of its own. Just as #Mastodon is its own fediverse server software. That's why #Firefish and Mastodon can interoperate with each other, because they use a common fediverse protocol called #ActivityPub :cirno_fumo_yes:
From the eyes of many Mastodon clients/apps though, it can look like a Mastodon server as Firefish supports the Mastodon API for compatibility with those clients.
@kakkokari_gtyih@misskey.io Hmm.. I don't think so? My understanding is that the #AGPL only applies to the source code and binaries of the software themselves, and screenshots are not either of them... :youmu_squint:
@lispi314@udongein.xyz That's definitely true for lossy, and somewhat true for lossless (the modular encoding one for JPEG XL). While JXL is smaller than WebP in terms of lossless, the savings are not very significant. It also doesn't help that converting to lossless modular JPEG XL is not completely lossless either, as WebP/PNG/GIF uses a different color space (RGB) than JXL (XYB). While not as bad as true lossy, you probably don't want to convert back-and-forth for archival purposes.
Except this analogy doesn't really work because in #piracy, the small authors still get a chance at some compensation via recognition of their works. And as that work gets more known and popular outside of the artist's intended and known avenues, the losses they got from each unauthorized copy will get covered eventually by those who just have learned about their work and have the ability to pay for it. As well as those who pirated the work from years before (probably when they're still a kid who can't really pay) and now finally purchases a copy legally (e.g. they're now an adult and have a working credit/debit card)
You can't say the same of #AIart / #AIscraping which sucks off from tens of hundred thousands of artists, a lot of whom are probably not well-known to begin with and will not get any people interested in their works via your big #LLMs and #AI. :seija_coffee:
