While JXL is smaller than WebP in terms of lossless, the savings are not very significant. It also doesn't help that converting to lossless modular JPEG XL is not completely lossless either, as WebP/PNG/GIF uses a different color space (RGB) than JXL (XYB). While not as bad as true lossy, you probably don't want to convert back-and-forth for archival purposes.

I don't want to have to wait for minutes over throttled connections for an image to update line by line. JPEG XL keeps JPEG's progressive decoding.
And yes, unfortunately ideally one doesn't convert an image once it is in its publishing format. The time to do it right was at creation time.New Janny in Town likes this.
