You can customise your Mastodon profile page to include text, images, animations and links to websites, other accounts etc. Links can also be verified as belonging to you, which makes them handy in verifying your identity.
More info on doing all of these at:
You can also expand your introductory material by creating a post about yourself using the hashtag #Introduction, and then pinning it to your profile. (More info on pinning: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-pin-my-posts-on-my-mastodon-profile/)
Federating just means there are lots of providers who connect to each other, like phone companies. You can call people on other phone companies because even rival phone companies are federated together.
The idea on here is if one provider is bad, you can switch to another provider without losing your followers and follows.
It sounds like you'll just have to use a shorter name?
They'll still be two totally separate accounts by the way, even if they had the same name.
I'm not sure why Pixelfed's would be shorter than Mastodon's, maybe someone at @pixelfed can answer?
There's usually always some kind of limit though?
Federating just means the servers can cope with linking up to other servers, they may not necessarily have identical features. (For example some servers have character limits in the thousands, and these will display correctly on Mastodon, but Mastodon usually restricts posts to 500 characters.)
In case you missed it, Mastodon now lets you edit posts ๐ฅณ
You can edit any post you've made, and it will send a notification to people who have already interacted with it to prevent any hijinks or shenanigans. It also lets people see the previous versions.
You can access it through your server's website and some third party apps, for example iPhone/iPad app Toot! and Android app Fedilab.
(The official app doesn't yet support it, so it's another good reason to check out third party apps.)
Okay, fair enough! I try to keep an up-to-date version of these tips on the website at https://fedi.tips
There's a hashtag #Introduction that new people generally use :)
Weird! Is there just nothing there for you?
This is what I see?
Okay, then there's something on Tooot that is fetching posts it shouldn't be...
@tooot can you help with this situation? Someone is seeing posts from people they've blocked, and this doesn't happen on other apps.
@LillyHerself @canadiancivil @Mastodon @Gargron
The default on mastodon is the box is unticked. If it's ticked, then there's a bug causing it.
As far as I can tell, this has only happened on mastodon.social, which is used by the developers for testing experimental features. It's possible their experiments have broken something related to the box being unticked.
Ahh okay, it's showing it inside Tooot?
Does it happen when you use your server's website or a different app?
(I'm just trying to narrow down if this is a problem on the app or on your server. It shouldn't be happening either way, but this could help solve it.)
Are you looking at the replies within your own server, i.e. without opening a new tab or window? (They may still be visible on the public website version of the threads.)
Are you still seeing them within your own timelines?
When you click on their profile, does it say "blocked" and "muted" on their profile?
Do you want your posts to be as easy to discover as possible? You might want to opt into the "full text search" system.
By default, posts on here are only searched by hashtag. However, if you opt into full text search, all the words in your entire posts will become searchable by other people.
Instructions on how to opt in are here:
โก๏ธ https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-opt-into-or-out-of-full-text-search-on-mastodon/
(If you don't want this to happen, don't worry, it's off by default.)
I think you need more connections to your server for trending to start noticing trending posts?
Alternatively, you could use FediBuzz relays to get more relevant content pushed towards your server:
https://fedi.tips/using-relays-to-quickly-expand-a-servers-view-of-the-fediverse/
Are you logging in via a bookmark? You might want to try deleting the bookmark, logging in and setting it to multicolumn, then creating a new bookmark.
Apparently there were alterations made to the URL on Mastodon 4.2.0 in relation to multi-column mode.
Which one is appearing for you (single or multicolumn?), and which one do you want to appear for you?
I'm not sure what the current status of Chirp is, there doesn't seem to have been an update on the code since March 2023.
The developer's account is @mike I think? Maybe they have news?
For the moment you might want to try a Guppe group instead?
