It's been growing pretty steadily over the past couple of years.
There's no money to advertise it, it relies entirely on word of mouth, so the growth will be slower but steadier.

Thanks for the fast response and explanation 🙏
Ahaa... Didn't realise the retention period covered posts as well, I thought it just stopped cacheing media. Interesting!
@ClaireFromClare @FrankSonntag @helenczerski
Aahh okay, I missed that part.
If they were there 12 hours ago and disappeared today, then it definitely sounds like some kind of server problem rather than anything working normally.
There's a short video which a lot of new people have found useful, you might want to share it if you're trying to explain to someone what Mastodon is:
https://tilvids.com/w/f747058d-3991-4046-a1c9-29c184daa0ff
(Video is by @tilvids who runs the excellent https://tilvids.com PeerTube server.)
@energisch_ @NafiTheBear @bitflipped
That's how @nextcloud suggests nextcloud servers to sign up on for new users, and as someone else pointed out online games do this with server suggestions too.

If this helps at all, there's a quick video which many new people have found useful:
Yeah, I did wonder that but vivaldi isn't listed on the blocklist.
And the user is still following people from mastodon.art on their vivaldi account, which wouldn't be possible if mastodon.art had blocked vivaldi.
This seems more like some kind of federation bug rather than a deliberate block?

I think when things are new they seem more difficult and complex.
Most people are so used to centralised social media, it can seem complicated/weird when you try federated networks.
But once people get used to it, it becomes much easier, as shown by how many use email, phones etc which are also federated networks.
@ClaireFromClare @helenczerski
All of the posts that are missing on the original page were made within a few days of each other, which might fit the temporary server glitch theory?
@ClaireFromClare @helenczerski
Very interesting!
That looks like some kind of bug, the difference is in the wrong direction and absolutely massive.
Sometimes you do get a difference but normally it's the other way round (with original page having lots of posts).
I'll try to see if anyone has reported this on the github.
@micron @Diana_mammalecology @Ruth_Mottram
For what it's worth, this place is a LOT easier to use now than it was a few years ago. For example the only Mastodon web interface was the multicolumn one, which some people love, but others (including myself) find very confusing.
The developers are getting there, but you have to hang around here for a bit to notice the evolution happening.
p.s. You also, of course, see other people's replies to yourself in the Home timeline :)
By the way, it took me ages to work out which replies you see! It's not at all obvious.
Replies in the Home timeline are only shown if the reply is made by someone you follow and is also replying to someone you follow.
If it's someone you follow replying to someone you have no connection to, it won't be shown in the Home timeline.
However, you will still be able to see public replies by going to someone's profile and browsing their replies section.
It also depends on visibility settings of the reply. There's a guide to visibilities here: https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon/

By the way, I'm sorry, reading back again I didn't mean to imply your criticism was invalid. I'm not saying that volunteer projects get a free pass on everything.
I answer a lot of questions in a row on here so I sometimes do answers a bit too quickly.
@grb090423 @Ruth_Mottram @micron
Hey there, if it's any use, I'd be glad to provide assistance to anyone who wants some help with getting started.
Weird... Maybe some temporary federation glitch then?
Are you still following m.a accounts on Vivaldi or have those disappeared from your follows list?
Are you able to make other m.a accounts appear using URL on vivaldi?
Is it just this one account that you cannot get to appear?
Can you find the new account on Vivaldi by entering it in the search box? Just to make the profile appear, I mean.
I'm sorry I can't help more 😞
Maybe try asking about it from your admin on vivaldi, and if they can't help then admin on mastodon.art?
(The only similar issue in github was a misconfigured server, but such large servers would probably have noticed such a problem before now.)
