The Home timeline is everything visible to you, but that includes all post visibilities: public, followers-only, mentions-only.

So, private messages for you will also be visible on your Home timeline.

Everyone has their own Home timeline.

The shared timelines which everyone can see are the Federated, Local and Explore timelines.

You can see a post's visibility by looking for the logo in the top right corner. A globe 🌎 means public, a 🔒 means followers-only, @ means mentions only.

I've just tried the official app, updated to latest version, feed works fine.

I'm guessing this might be because you're on mastodon.social? It's way too overcrowded and this often causes technical problems. You might find other servers are more reliable.

By the way, you don't have to use the official app at all, the third party apps tend to be better. On iOS apps like Ice Cubes, Toot!, Ivory and Mona are good.

You can see normal mutes and muted notifications from your profile's mutes list, but it doesn't cover muted boosts.

What are you using to post with? The website?

Did you know you can search for emoji on Mastodon? Just paste or type the emoji you want into the search box, and the results will be posts with that emoji in them.

This also works for filters, which let you filter posts with particular emoji instead of particular words.

Bear in mind, the full text search option was only just brought in on the latest update, and even then only as an opt-in system. It could be they will tweak it later.

For context, on Twitter trolls misused the search system to find victims, Mastodon deliberately restricted how search would work (originally all searches were by hashtag).

There's no special operator for links, just search for the actual text in the link.

For example if you search for t.co you will get lots of posts with links to Twitter.

Yeah, exactly! Filters are often seen as just a safety feature, but they're also really good as a timeline customisation feature.

You can use parts of words as wildcards, if you make sure you UN-tick the box marked "whole word".

You can use Mastodon's filter system to automatically hide posts containing certain words or phrases. The posts can either be hidden behind a warning, or just hidden completely.

Although they're usually used for hiding offensive material, filters can be used for any reason. Some people use temporary filters to avoid spoilers of an upcoming film, others use them to filter out Wordle posts for example.
