Oooh, is this new? (Rhetorical question - even if it is not new, it seems new to me!) I really like how mastodon (in the version currently running on mastodon.social) explains how blocks work!
P.S. Obviously not blocking this particular account, used it as an example 😅
Hm, is it possible to search for a link (eg whether someone linked to an article) on #mastodon?
I just tried searching for a link I myself posted and it did not work. I can find the post searching for words it used otherwise, so it's definitely ingested into the search. So I am wondering whether I am missing some important bit of search syntax.
People post because they want to vent, to share their frustration, to make others laugh or shake heads. If ppl post to get advice, they usually ask.
So: You want to give advice?
Has the person explicitly asked for it? No? Then don't.
But you really, really want to give advice! Still: no!
But your advice is really relevant! Still: no.
But you also know the person well (you follow them & they you & you interacted): ask if they want advice. If they don't explicitly say yes - it's still a no.
Oh, apparently yesterday was #PortfolioDay and I missed it! I am Victoria and I am doing #SciArt, mainly focusing on astronomy & astrophysics (#astrodon) and on #academia & research commentary.
@Ruth_Mottram@feditips@micron love this! One thing I would add, especially to academics, is to consider enabling search for one's account (assuming that one is on a server that allows that). For being part of a scientific discussion that would be important and one needs at least to be aware that this is a conscious choice here and not automatic.
