To put that number into perspective, there were only around 2,500 US soldiers killed in Afghanistan during decades of occupation.

The robber could have been reaching for something, or made some other movement that prompted the last shot. It's a bit of a reach, but I don't think a jury would be very sympathetic to an armed robber in Texas.
