@minespatch I've never been homeless and hopefully never will be, so maybe I don't understand, but...If I set up a tent someplace that I'm not allowed, what happens? The cops put me in a climate-controlled jail cell and give me food and hygiene stuff?

I guess they'd be deprived of drugs and cell phones, though.

It turns out a lot of problems that modern medicine "solves" were solved a long time ago by various herbs, long forgotten, which are too inexpensive and easy for normal people to grow for companies to make obscene profits off of them.

Turmeric with black pepper fruit extract works *better* than ibuprofen to reduce swelling. Pure turpentine (not the denatured, byproduct stuff) helps with respiratory issues. Peppermint tea does wonders for an upset stomach.

There is a plant, called the "tootheache plant," that most people have never heard of, the leaves of which cause numbing when chewed. It's easy to grow and helps with, you guessed it, tootheaches.

Holy basil helps with basically everything but especially mood and stress, and there's a reason garlic was said to ward off evil in times past.

There's so much natural stuff out there that we have a responsibility to rediscover, because the "healthcare" system is really the "sick care" system that exists solely to keep you a customer for as long as possible, not to cure you.

@p @tyler @Lance @gabriel @matty @parker @graf @Aldis @Big_Diggity A lot of admins here don't care for containers (understandable, they're complex, and complexity often invites security issues), but there's a reason they're getting so popular. Podman allows running containers in userspace and has an emphasis on security, unlike Docker. It can be set to run containers on startup, and all the Linux system capabilities (SYSCAP) can be tweaked or taken away from a given container as needed. The book Podman in Action is a good intro to how it works.

So if you want a reasonably "secure system" with some measure of defense in depth, you might consider a tiny OS whose only purpose is to run containers and have a proxy like Nginx as the frontend to forward requests by hostname to their respective container ports. The downside is the hassle to configure it all...Better take good notes when setting things up.

(Of course, Podman is also owned by Red Hat/IBM, who decided this past week to go scorched earth on anyone who doesn't pay them, so that's worth keeping in mind too.)

@leyonhjelm It seems like most tech fields are like that. It's turned into this rote money-making scheme instead of actual innovation and experimentation. Everyone just wants to play it safe and not "waste time" on the sort of things nobody else has tried before.

In the end, you have to speak the truth, and it’s up to others whether they want to listen or continue down the dark path. So far the nation has chosen the dark path, and that choice is probably just a symptom of moral decay that happened long before most of us were even born.
