I thought that "Nuance for the oppressor is the hallmark of the privileged" was pretty dramatic, and I agree strongly.

I thought the idea that programs should say 'user' not 'account' was dramatic, and I thought it was very silly. (The two words do not mean the same thing.)

"Contentious" is the better word, I think, and you should not take it to mean I always disagree – or that it's necessarily a reason to mute someone.

@aral My take: mostly yes, a little bit no.

It's like perfect pitch. It's an innate ability; some folks have it, some don't. You can learn it, too, or something like it. It lets you do things folks without it can't do.

But having perfect pitch doesn't make you a better person.

@neil I **do** post markdown now. I've not _heard_ any complaints? But why would anyone complain? Isn't the whole point of it that it looks okay unrendered, too?

@aral @annaleen But it doesn't have to mean that. It's certainly not *supposed* to mean that. It's supposed to centre the design of the interface around the experience of the people using it. "User Experience". That should be the opposite of what you describe — although I agree it often isn't.

@aral Agree strongly with your first para. But you can have *too many* design decisions. (Imagine if Lotus had decided that 123 could only total down, and not across, because _they_ felt it made more sense that way.) And I'm not seeing much customisation in Gnome compared to, say, KDE.

Disclaimer: I walked away from using Gnome quite some time ago. Perhaps it's got better since at listening to users. But then again…

@aral The underlying problem here is the same one Gnome has been exhibiting for a long time now: they decide how your computer behaves, not you. One-size-fits-all is not in any way Linux-y.

@SwiftOnSecurity *offline* backups. They will wait until your online backups are infected and catch those, too. (Personal experience, here.)

Even assuming there are more of the former than the latter (which is questionable), you have to bear in mind how much harm the latter can do.

The real question is "how many good QTs does it take to justify the harm of a bad one?"

@nellie_m @aral Well, technically, she's more or less right. Everything she sees is *presented in* a window. So if she says "The email window" to describe Outlook, say, then that's pretty much how I describe it, too…

@aral "app" is an almost meaningless word. Might as well say it's a solution that you can architect.
