  Influenza is one of the most contagious and rapidly spreading infectious diseases and an important global cause of hospital admissions and mortality. There are some amounts of the virus in the air constantly. These amounts is generally not enough to cause disease in people, due to infection prevention by healthy immune systems. However, at a higher concentration of the airborne virus, the risk of human infection increases dramatically. Early detection of the threshold virus concentration is essential for prevention of the spread of influenza infection. This review discusses different approaches for measuring the amount of influenza A virus particles in the air and assessing their infectiousness. Here we also discuss the data describing the relationship between the influenza virus subtypes and virus air transmission, and distribution of viral particles in aerosol drops of different sizes.

*they measured the efficiency of viral spread* ie the infectiousness

it is *obvious* to the authors that viruses exist because it's causing infection, and it's testing as such. What's *not* obvious is how much infectiveness there is, which is what you were questioning upthread. That's what they measured.

No they didn't. Because that wasn't what they were studying. They were studying the infectiousness.

They relied on *others* to do that kind of test.

No, it's not.

On the contrary: it does show that someone is infected with *something*. Something that is not only transmissible, but which it's even possible to measure *how* transmissible (see above study)

'PCR doesn't tell you if you're sick' but it *does* identify the presence of a virus. ie you can use it to measure whether infection occurred. Whether you get sick *from* the infection depends on your immune system and other factors.

Google is not a source. In this case I barely used google at all...it's a starting point not a place to get answers.

And I did have personal experience in this question, too -- like you I was there for feb 11, 2020 and can remember the change in nomenclature around that time, because by then I was already talking about "2019ncov" and was busy collecting data about it
