@renai well most of what’s great about it you’ll just get from playing.
But what I think is really underappreciated is just how ambitious this game is - the medium it’s describing is very young, but absurdly documented. It’s streams, they’re all like 6 hours of shit happening, and there’s one every day for every streamer, but it’s all out there, perfectly documented and preserved! It’s one thing to tackle a biography of a writer who’s done fuck knows what for the first 30 years of his life in the 19th century (Joseph Conrad), another to do this shit and not embarrass yourself.
This game pulls in an absurd ammount of references! To the point where I’d risk looking like a fucking retard trying to describe any of these, since they’ll overlap and many are a nip thing. There’s always more fine cuts to dig up, but NGO manages to do all the good ones in a respectable manner.
Another plain smart thing is how it released. Honestly, this game couldn’t have come out any year before it did. It’s not that there weren’t the content for it - but you don’t release a game which nuance will be lost on 90% of audience, so it’d have to be gimped to hell. With the rise of vtubers, 2021-2022 was as close as the zeitgeist will ever come to understanding the phenomenology of ethot streamers. Thanks to this, NGE did not have to limit tself to the surface level observations, but could pull on 15 years of history and it was perfectly digestable to players.
And it’s cute in general. Banger music, classy style, pulls that good media-mix thing japan does with the after-release streams, it’s good.
Gestalt internet constructs were never supposed to be given fleshy appendages, much less be the driver for some egotistic females
I’d argue they never were! That’s what differentiates a vtuber from a streamer. Streaming is already a performance, but an avatar adds another layer of dissociation. Where people will see the very same jerma/asmongold/whatever you see on streams out in the wild, doing groceries, looking for hoes on thinder, this is impossible for a vtuber: the character only goes as far as the avatar takes is and not an inch more. Of course, there’s ways to blur the play/real barrier in both cases, but the natural predispositions speak to something.
present would certainly benefited from not having as much cancer of so many variants.
Brave of you to assume it wouldn’t find other ways to sneak into your perception. I opt to just enjoy the finer approaches it takes.
@iamtakingiteasy now that the dust has settled I’m gonna tag @ryo because this masterpiece being posted is indirectly his fault. I was reading his recent blog post and his exercise in english languge has caused my computer to display the phrase mini-stallmans:
On the other hand the vast majority of the people who actually do understand privacy and technology, and legit teach you real OPSEC for free are kind of like mini-Stallmans, in which they are highly intelligent about privacy and technology, but are rather retarded about every other subject they’re covering (especially politics and/or economy).
But my mind immediately went to microstallmans, like microprocessors. I pictured them as little plates with engravings of gnuhead, embedded in the brain, sounding alarms whenever you’re about to use a paid toilet and such. But FSF dumping concious-consumption inducing chemicals into the internet’s supply of digital ink also works.
I have a certain way of writing when unchained… Drunk or otherwise. I’ve been told japanese can be a context-heavy language, you may picture how bad it can get. And I’m an ESL too, though one educated on the matter.
Maybe the reason why I can say that is because I’m not in Germany (or anywhere else in Europe)
“eu is an orwellian hellhole” is quite a bit of a meme as far as I can tell. You know how that one turkish “”influencer”” once said eu countries can turn facist in a snap of a finger? I’d have to agree. And on that note, I’ll have to bother you about this:
Asian governments generally are very tyrannical on paper, in practise as long as you don’t speak ill of the king (or otherwise be considered a threat to the ruling government) and don’t use drugs, they don’t actually care.
Can you actually say this? You’ve seen how rest of asia handles their internals, or is this a guess?
@ryo Pretty sure they just shut the fuck up instead, the last notable german arrest I’ve heard of was jstark. Still hilarious how they can’t say merkel is a facist or torrent a football match, and how tor or ignoring the mail deals with it because these are ridiculous to enforce.
This is a new one. I guess it’s gotta be either derogatory or celebratory in the weirdest sense, and the only people who get to have a proper opinion on this particualr description get to go to jail for airing it… good going Ryo.
News is whatever, feels like a natural course of action, in a “we live in hell” kind of way.
Just to be pedantic, there’s ways to enforce #fediblock that don’t make the scoreboard. Some literally who 20 people instance does this to eientei, so there’s surely more. These might add up to a notable increase, along with the other things you’re not mentioning here. I imagine it’s nothing worth challenging the point you’re making though.
@ryo I'm sure it's an informed preference. I don't work with code enough to develop these. Only vaguely related, but I thought you'd get a kick out of this: npm on debian is almost 400 packages.
@ryo It's just a thought, and I'm talking about personal use, not production. It's nice to be able to read how internet sites you visit work, and stupid userscripts go a long way in liberating your internet experience. And with node you could write real programs too, without losing your mind picking a language for the job! I picture kids being taught basics of js and the knowledge going places, being a net positive to the world. Unfortunately npm is fucked up, and you can't ignore the other stuff you listed either.
> having retarded results (like 1 + '1' = 11 instead of a type error) Gonna call you a boomer here though. Type coercion definitely resides somewhere above "I can live with this" on my like/dislike spectrum.
