@arstechnica Just imagine if the whole world had gone this sort of route instead of the clearly much more effective route of "it's just the flu. The emergency is over. Just ignore it" in regards to the biggest global pandemic to occur in at least a century with significant argument that in some ways it could be the worst in multiple centuries in fact.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 21-Dec-2023 07:13:57 JST Nazo @arstechnica This would cause too many accidents and class action lawsuits. A device detecting that a person's hand might be raised is not legal consent to charge money to them. They will be sued to oblivion even for trying such a thing. There's surely no way they're too stupid to realize this, so my guess is this idea never makes it to market.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 20-Dec-2023 18:54:50 JST Nazo @itsfoss Yeah, thankfully excellent alternatives already exist.
Really I had only chosen VMWare back in the day because it was among the first to integrate at least really basic GPU acceleration. These days I think they all do at least a small amount though.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 20-Dec-2023 18:44:58 JST Nazo @nixCraft Right now I'm going to have to say "AI." Especially since none of the things people are insisting upon calling AI over and over actually have the most important part of that: the actual intelligence. LLMs and today's algorithms don't understand, they just sift through connections.
I don't know if it's the most overhyped of all time -- I'm drawing a blank trying to think of others at this level -- but it sure is bad. Companies are throwing everything into it and it's going to fail.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 20-Dec-2023 15:52:51 JST Nazo @itsfoss A good time to remember FOSS alternatives to VMWare exist. VirtualBox seems to be the enterprise-capable option (which this mostly affects -- I don't think it looks like they're doing anything to free users yet) but of course qemu is the most powerful, most fully open, and potentially most versatile and the expense of more setup.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 20-Dec-2023 15:15:04 JST Nazo @nixCraft Prices are off. The chair is more like $250, the mattress $500 (you literally can't buy anything remotely resembling a mattress or anything thicker than a sheet for $20, trust me!) and the computer probably $2000-2500.
Anyway, I'm not a developer, but I can answer that: because to people such as us, all those things other people care so much about -- couches, etc -- really don't matter and we'd rather put our money in what we care about.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 20-Dec-2023 08:20:58 JST Nazo @itsfoss The upshot of this is I finally got off my duff and started migrating to either VirtualBox or maybe qemu down the road. (For now just VirtualBox since it's the most like VMWare sans the crap and bloat.)
I mean I know this particular thing doesn't affect normal users like myself. Yet. But I guarantee they're going to get to that point eventually.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 20-Dec-2023 07:49:01 JST Nazo @nixCraft This is like being so afraid of the outside world that you literally only go outside in a bubble except the bubble is made of metal instead of plastic and cost you so much you had to get another mortgage on the house.
I 100% agree with the idea of safe practices in general, but you *have* to draw a line. This is so far past any reasonable line that it's in another solar system.

I realize Ars Technica doesn't do articles solely for the crowd here, but I really don't think that, as a whole, the tech audience that normally reads these articles is particularly on the edge of their seat to hear about the latest pickup truck the instant breaking news comes out...

Too bad about the cyanide poisoning.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 18-Dec-2023 10:31:54 JST Nazo @nixCraft I generally avoid a lot of Google's stuff like that, but this could be very helpful in these times of a major global pandemic existing while society tries very very very hard to pretend it doesn't. I may have to make use of this when I have to do things like actually go into a store.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 18-Dec-2023 10:22:17 JST Nazo @nixCraft It's not even AI... If their filters slip a bit or just someone accidentally puts in just the wrong thing that can't really be filtered exactly, it could do horrible things -- like telling a person to kill themselves or something. I'm not going to get into the whole Asimovian thing here, but regardless, this just simply is not AI and it has very bad consequences...

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 16-Dec-2023 20:27:47 JST Nazo @arstechnica It's almost enough to make one wonder if the strange delay from the company that basically bought support from McDonalds rather than compete openly is because they need time to reverse engineer the competitor they're trying to stamp out rather than truly make their own. It's enough to make one wonder anyway.
Either way, this whole mess definitely is a good reminder of how bad closed systems that don't allow third parties to repair truly can be -- even for businesses.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 16-Dec-2023 19:10:58 JST Nazo @Gargron I feel like we should be able to go to profile settings and type it in a block configuration rather than going into an account or something, but at least it's easy enough to search up an account. I just typed in threads.net in my instance search box and clicked the first account, lol.

Nazo (nazokiyoubinbou@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 16-Dec-2023 14:02:49 JST Nazo @itsfoss That was... quite a reaction... If it makes anyone feel any better, some of us Windows users feel the same way about 11. An unfortunately rarer subset of us feel the same way about 10.
