@lebronjames75@Zerglingman@jeff@Moon@birdulon no, the issue is that some version of pipewire (?) failed to reinitialize soundcard after PC wakes up from sleep, easily fixed by changing audiocard profile to anything.
See, the difference between windows audio issues and linux audio issues is that you know what the issue is and how to overcome it properly. Windowsfags be like "don't use USB 3.0" and "use ASIO"
that common behavior is not adequate, I would prefer if all software just not downmix my stereo to mono without my consent.
<>just install 3 extra software layers to do extra work behind the scenes to simulate common behaviour!
????????? i didn't install anything extra to ""simulate"" common behavior, it's a feature of OS, plus it makes more sense to have separate devices for each separate input instead of bundling them together into thing they aren't even meant to do in the first place (bundling separate mono input into stereo/quad/etc inputs)
Proper behavior would be transmitting stereo signal as is.
@jeff@Zerglingman@Moon@lebronjames75@birdulon it's not audiophile, it's the :gigachad: audio engineer "fix your audio setup, bitch" vs :evidence_fan: windows musician "booohooo i don't want to change my audio setup software it just werkssssssss" thread
@pomstan@Zerglingman@jeff@Moon@lebronjames75@birdulon most likely for compatibility sake it's exported as a "single" device with multiple channels so that DAWs know it's a same physical device with same clock, and split it into channels by itself, otherwise it would assume it's separate physical devices and attempt to synchronize them.
You can split channels into virtual mono devices, or even split quad devices into separate stereo devices, it's been a feature in pipewire and pulseaudio before it for years. Dunno why if it's possible on windows.
@lebronjames75@Zerglingman@jeff@Moon@birdulon it's very unlikely that it's gonna be a common feature. It might be implemented on a hwim in some software, but at the end of the day, non-mono mics and multichannel devices are mostly for audio engineers and musicians. You are better off splitting channels into devices yourself than waiting for this ultra-niche feature to become common.
@lebronjames75@Zerglingman@jeff@Moon@birdulon Yes, i understand that on discord he would get extremely quite volume and on discord he would get proper volume (or no volume if it's not channel 0). I also understand that he would (unlike you) set up proper device splitting.
@lebronjames75@Zerglingman@jeff@Moon@birdulon downmixing to mono is information loss too you idiot. 99% people use shit "gamer headset" which has mono microphone input, if your "microphone" is an audiocard with multiple inputs you WANT to have separate audio devices for your mono inputs, or else software you use will have to downmix it for you in a way you don't want it to. How does mumble downmix? use left channel (channel 0), simple as. How does discord downmix? Probably downmix "stereo" which isn't stereo to begin with to mono and since the right channel is completely silent you only get 50% of volume. Let me reiterate - vast majority people use mono microphones, stereo microphones are extremely uncommon, even if phone has a stereo microphone it will only use one of them for actual calls, it won't downmix "stereo" or "3.0" into mono because it will lower the overall loudness and would waste energy doing calculations.
You are arguing about your shitty niche windows-user-musician usecase working "better" in some software than it is in other.
this is for a different thing but the overall approach is the same. Also it's not 30 pages, you're literally playing Sunless Sea, you don't get to complain about READING
@lebronjames75@Moon@Zerglingman@birdulon@jeff also the blogpost contains both setup for PulseAudio, PipeWire AND detailed explanation for everything that is happening in it, you ungrateful windows user fuck, go buy VirtualAudioCable for $20
@birdulon@Zerglingman@jeff@Moon@lebronjames75 no, no one cares about "basic" audio engineer features, but here, a feature to pay us money to "super react" and cause epilepsy to someone
