I was more or less shitposting. I think the value of a person's skills really depends on what value other people place on it. A doctor is assumed to be highly skilled, and more individuals are likely to consider the product of the skilled doctor to be of higher value than the brick layer. It is funny though that at the end of the day the man laying bricks might actually leave something behind that can be appreciated for centuries which **could** open room for the argument that their labor is of higher value. At the end of the day a sick person who is scared to die will pay just about anything for a little more time. We can shop around more for someone who can competently lay bricks without risking our lives in most cases. -

Most western countries are capitalist, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand. Also capitalist are Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates. However, many of these countries, including the United States, have implemented socialist policies within their capitalist systems, such as social security, minimum wages, and energy subsidies.

I do pay for food, but there are farms that produce their own, and the funny thing is "the market" deems free range to be of higher value than the stupid industrial egg producers anyway. Living accomodations can be made out of wood which most people with enough property can probably come by. My small 3/4 acre property has over 20 trees on it. One is dead and when it comes down I'm going to use it to build things. -

> all 3 of them who haven't been ruined by compeitition yet
just sounds like a cop out tbh. "It's hard to succeed so it might as well be considered impossible". I know several people personally that run farm style businesses that aren't receiving subsidies and don't have 10 million dollar combines compacting their soil. The large equipment is actually bad for the soil and shortens the life of a farm anyway so now we just have farms that can't produce without enormous inputs, and eventually that won't even help once they reach bedrock so the land will be sold off to build shit houses, and there is a good chance the developers will be subsidized. All those subsidies are socialism fucking up the planet and skewing the markets. -

This is just saying you can predict prices with... other prices. nothing about actual "value". They even say that in the paper.i
> Given the statistics that
are available for capitalist economies, however, one has no choice but to use data that are expressed in monetary
terms. Instead of in-kind figures for, say, the quantity of coal used by the steel industry or the quantity of aluminium used by the aircraft industry, we have figures for the money value of the purchases of each industry from
each other industry. And instead of a vector of hours of direct labour performed in each industry we have a
vector of wage bills. -

If you give the animals access to the ground they'll do it for free. There are farms that do not rely on multi-million dollar bank loans and heavy equipment that do well enough to keep themselves fed and in business. Just because everyone can't make it work doesn't mean it doesn't work. You don't need to compete with Californian almond farmers to grow apples in Virginia. You also don't have to dominate the market to consider yourself successful. That mentality is a disease in my opinion. -

It's a thing that's been done for a long time and doesn't require subsidies.
> The same discourse applies beyond agriculture.
And many of the major brands have received subsidies in one form or another over their lifetimes. -

Honestly it's more like society trying to predict value based on previous exchanges than society holding a particular item to be of a certain value. Society is not conscious, and it would seem consciousness is required to appreciate value (separate from predicting it). -

Right now I could hop over on etsy and find hand made clothing, furniture, soaps crafted in people's kitchens, and tons of other stuff that people buy all the time for far more money than the "equal" product would go for in walmart or whatever.
