    @niclas a still can also be used to make essential oils and clean water. The laws limiting ownership of a still or requiring registration are even more outlandish to me than telling me what I can do with one if I own it.

    @niclas A shot here and there in the winter months can make outdoor work a bit easier to handle, but I think anyone but a hardcore alcoholic would acknowledge that limiting consumption while working at least is good with or without laws. I just don't understand how "should not overindulge" turns into "must not manufacture (or even own equipment that can be used to manufacture)" so easily.

    In the US, distillation laws seem to be rooted in the prohibition which was reppealed in 1933 at the constitutional level. From what I've always been told the laws around distillation are there to protect would be moonshiners from methanol poisoning, but after looking more into it it seems like that's kind of a false fear because most moonshiners discard the foreshots where methanol might be in highest concentration, and most of the methanol poisoning related to moonshine seems to have been spiked with methanol.

    Fruits produce the most methanol which is what is used to make wine and cider, and there is no law preventing me from making wine or cider.

    @incognitum We were told explicitly that MacAfee had a deadmans switch but nothing ever came of that. I don't know what is "standard practice" but yes you'd think someone concerned they might be murdered for fear they'd release information might find some way of making sure that it's released upon their death as a way to disincentivize their wouldbe attackers.

    Also it's not that I think it couldn't be done, but murdered made sense to me.

    @incognitum I never had any doubts that epstein was running a blackmail ring. I just thought maybe he was murdered not faking his death. I am kind of shocked by the way everyone is behaving as if we didn't already have good reason to believe he was filming powerful people in compromising situations and selling that blackmail to members of the international intelligence community.

    @Lady_Penelope @Flick no but I do have family that does a lot of traveling and it could have been a gift to my dad from one of them. I have no idea how it ended up here but it's pretty cool. I'd seen this kind of art before but never handled any. I've had this thing rattling around in my office for a few years but didn't stop to think whether it was a real egg until today. At one point it was on my desk, and then we got a cat.

    @niclas if you make (or pay cash for) a still I think it would be easy enough to not register it. I wonder how many people buy equipment without realizing they need to register it.

    I'm just blown away by how retarded wv actually is on a number of issues like this. It's all about making sure the state gets their tax revenue from what I can tell, but fuck man I'm not even interested in sales. Just hobby shit. Right next to the warning about not registering equipment with authoritarians is a warning that transporting untaxed liquor is a federal offense.
