    I'll give a few factoids I've learned from a lifetime in that business.

    Number one: Unless it's religiously maintained all CRE retail buildings leak. It's not if, it's when.

    Number two: Depending on the property operator once a store leaves it can either be picked clean down to the studs, or have all kinds of stuff left behind. At the earlier referenced job there was a former GNC that had all of its inventory paperwork, product sample tubs for displays, and even a lunchbox with food left behind. An adjacent storefront had filled out applications complete with Social Security Numbers hanging in a document file behind the counter. A third had all manner of cables and even baby pictures.

    Number three: If the power is switched off it is really difficult to see, even with flashlights. The sight-lines are meant for overhead fluorescent lighting, and really aren't conducive to not having electricity.

    @mackya @UnCL3 There's little reason to go to one now, unless there's some specific thing you want that day. The people at malls are just as ugly and out of shape as anywhere else, the products are just as overpriced (if not more so), and now there's the new wrinkle of diversity making trips in and out of malls equivalent to gun runs in Falluja in certain cities.

    Kmart currently has two stores left in the continental US. One is closing next month on Long Island, the other is a smaller than normal location in South Florida that takes up the room of what was once the garden section of a normal store.

    In my adult life I can remember them being nearly as universal as Walmart, and now they are basically extinct.
