Urzl (gooba42@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 04-Apr-2024 06:32:56 JST Urzl @Gargron @potus Honestly, I don't think any institutions should run their accounts on somebody else's instances.
@potus@us.gov along with all of Congress and other federal government reps on it that doesn't then have to share any of Facebook's deservedly bad reputation.
Same for states or companies, they should run their own instances for complete ownership of their content and distribution.

They update and they're the fastest thing around for like 2 weeks, then a Chromium change wipes out their lead for 3 years running.
They pretty much constantly feel experimental - like using unstable packages on Gentoo Linux as a daily driver.

Urzl (gooba42@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 27-Mar-2024 20:34:49 JST Urzl @nixCraft My supervisor for almost 2 years was degreed in computer science and super knowledgeable. He's a good programmer and an awesome senior to have available for questions.
I'm self-taught and generally regarded as really good at this but it's largely because I'm aggressively autodidactic and genuinely love doing the best work I can do.
We're not as far apart as 2 degreed programmers, one who cares about doing good work and one who cares only about getting good pay.

What, other than petty control over their fiefdoms, do they want?

Urzl (gooba42@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 18-Mar-2024 05:46:49 JST Urzl @aral Legal at work only just seems to have noticed that we're not allowed to steal OSS and so they're on a mission to purge all references to AGPL libraries.
I'm in a team where we've never been much for outside libraries but have also never had active intrusion by way of security scans and Git repo monitoring. It's turning into a huge pain in the ass to prove we're essentially compliant by default.

They're sure as hell not going to let an AI *approve* payments.

Whether I've been able to make any adjustments accordingly is a different matter.

Urzl (gooba42@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 04-Jan-2024 01:38:52 JST Urzl @nixCraft I hate that they keep entering into competition in markets they don't actually want to inhabit.
They jump in long enough to kill off a bunch or even all of the competitors and then they kill their project.
They don't just push everybody to their solution, they push everybody onto their solution and then pull the plug.

Urzl (gooba42@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Dec-2023 23:20:07 JST Urzl @nixCraft My employer is chipping away at what they offer in terms of general support, especially for WFH employees.
They cancelled even my virtual desk phone number and all voice is sent through Teams now.
More recently they stopped paying for internet and just have us all on our own connections.
They're not going to pay for cell service so even though my phone supports dual SIM, I can't justify paying to use it myself.

Urzl (gooba42@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 25-Dec-2023 17:31:24 JST Urzl @nixCraft I suspect that any craft mastered and elevated to the level of intuitive creation crosses over into art.
There are no lessons available for cutting Gordian knots. As much as we might sometimes pretend that coding is all about perfect execution of engineering best practices, the Muse is still a big part of really good code.

The people who drive such trucks DGAF about electric and the people who care about electric don't drive trucks. This feels like an intentional failure to drive "people don't want EVs" propaganda.

Lack of technical focus wasn't really their weak point.
