Somehow half of the USAians have deluded themselves into thinking that Trump is the greatest evil in the world, while he just has a for some annoying character. The term is useful if you take it more in it's semantic meaning.

A theory which includes the idea that there is a conspiracy to keep facts hidden.

Since the theory usually needs journalists, detectives, scientists, or historians (who's job is to find out the truth) to be part of the conspiracy, those professions are not fond of those theories and talk in a derogatory way about them. Thus the spiral of distrust.

Confirmation bias is also a big factor.
