@nixCraft It's what happens when you have legacy cruft and technical debt going back to the late-1960s. You think Windows invented backwards compatibility?

@itsfoss I've been finding Linux easier to use, and less frustrating, than Windows 11 and macOS. I mean, there's still rough spots here and there, like spanning my file system across two nVME drives easily is hit or miss depending on the distro, but to be fair it's not that easy in Windows and not even an option in macOS.

@itsfoss I went from Windows to macOS to Linux on my desktop (I still have macOS on my laptop). The fact my Steam Deck can play just about any game I throw at it, and most of what it can't play is due to hardware limitations, is what sold me on it.

@nixCraft I installed Linux Mint last night while both exhausted and stoned off my rocker.

@itsfoss I've been using Bazzite Linux, and for the few people I know who have computers with desktop operating systems, that aren't running macOS, have been very interested in my experiences and excited to see SteamOS coming to new systems.

I think it's possible that Windows will finally lose market share with gamers because of all the crap going on with 11. I feel like the number of people who play PC games that don't run well on Linux under Proton aren't as big as they're made out to be.

@nixCraft I'm 46, I don't keep Apple Boxes anymore, but I have enough cables to wire a nuclear submarine. (And that's because I threw away an aircraft carrier's worth of wires when I was in my mid-30s.)

And my nprogramming books are now ebooks. My "Billion-dollar idea" isn't tech related. My monitor setup is well organized and intentional. And my cryptocurrency was from an experiment Ars Technica hosted, like, 10 years ago and couldn't only be used to temporarily buy hats on their forum.

I got my first computer for Christmas around 1984, so I'd have been six or seven by the time I could write a simple program on my own.

@nixCraft I once got a job at a junk mail company who had this super long, 45-minute, process to sort the mailing lists their clients gave them to once that fit certain criteria. Everything was copy to Excel, sort, remove a certain number, copy back in, etc. Embarrassingly manual process.

On my second day, I commented the entire job could be done with a Python script.

There was no third day.

@rasterweb How much would the CEO of a similar sized for-profit company make? Then realize they need to attract and retain the same quality talent.

It's a super, super common complaint about non-profits that doesn't take into account the reality of the job market for wanting to attract and retain qualified employees.

Also, you want a non-profit to have reasonable quality equipment and facilities. Which bumps up the amount of overhead they have.

@Gargron I had an actual rat. The big rat isn't much smaller than a real rat with clothes.

@arstechnica I want to see New Glenn fly for the same reason as SLS. Just to see it happen.

I want to see New Glenn fly a second time, because of their goal of reusable rockets. More SLSs launched means more industrial garbage in the ocean.

@wonderofscience To be fair, the top image should be Robert Goddard with his similarly early liquid rocket, which would have dated to 1926. So, 53 years from the earliest liquid fueled rockets.

@nixCraft The bug is intermittent and just seems to happen at random.

@nixCraft Meanwhile, in the real world, Debian has a strongly worded article about how UEFI and Secure Boot actually are for security reasons and that, on a Linux only system, you can wipe the default keys and install keys from that Linux distro.

@nixCraft I use One Drive (on Linux and macOS) and trust Microsoft to back it up more often than I could manage. I have stuff that gets backed up, in significant ways, multiple times a day, and I just play video games and write fiction for fun. There's no way I could, for instance, maintain a reasonable backup at a friend's house without some technical means that are out of my (and the friend's) ability to handle, while Microsoft does it automatically.

@nixCraft I got a Steam Deck and realized how capable Linux was for gaming and the next time I made a gaming desktop I put Bazzite Linux on it.

I was big into Windows from 7 until 11, but I couldn't abide the spyware changes anymore. I moved to macOS, but the hardware, while amazing because Apple Silicon is hard to beat, was limited by RAM, so I sold my M2Pro MacMini and build an all AMD midrange desktop running Linux for gaming.
