@arstechnica Go ahead RFK Jr, strike out against knowledge and see what comes of it 🙄

@itsfoss The question should really be what flavour of Arch to try 😂

@itsfoss I envy people that are comfortable with an out-of-the-box experience.
Don’t know what’s wrong with me, I just can’t. It bothers me to no end if I can’t customise the system from the start like with Arch and Gentoo 😂
Though I do like the installation experience on OpenSuse Tumbleweed and EndeavourOS.
I would be using one of them if not for issues in the past with Tumbleweed and regional settings, and with EndeavourOS you couldn’t set up BTRFS via the installer.

@itsfoss I’ve had my eye on this project for some time now. We need a good alternative to VSCode.
VSCodium and Code OSS are fine for the most part, but some extensions, such as the CSharp extensions, won’t work without effort. And who knows for how long until M$ makes it near impossible to use outside of VSCode.
I’m currently using JetBrains Rider, but that has telemetry force-enabled for the community version.
I just want to get away from these data-grabbing corpos 😠

@itsfoss My experience with their new GTK app is mostly fine. I’ve not had any crashes or issues that prevent me from using it. The app is now included in the Arch Extra repository which is cool.
It did occasionally “forget” that I was signed in. Contacting support was a waste of time; just giving me the standard “Arch is not a supported distro” line. The AUR package was using the Ubuntu deb package 🙄
They should work on improving the startup; it takes a few seconds before anything is usable.

@nixCraft Truth. I would love to learn and use Python and Rust but we use C# and the .NET stack at work and I don’t have the time or energy atm to learn new languages and their frameworks.

@itsfoss Building AUR packages in a chroot with Paru and then adding them to a custom repository.

@nixCraft I always used the mainline precompiled kernel from the distribution repo’s. Nowadays I compile my own via linux-tkg, which really simplifies the process.

@itsfoss I disable secure DNS in the browser as I use NextDNS with DoT via systemd-resolved.
DoH support is being worked on, though they could use more contributors.

@itsfoss I prefer using drop files in /etc/sudoers.d
My top 4 tweaks are:
- Set rnano as the default editor
- Disable the sudo lecture
- Allow sudo access for users in the wheel group
- Enable insults 😝 -

@itsfoss I tend to prefer Arch repos > AUR > Flatpak.
Don’t really care for AppImages, they usually have an AUR package available.
I will never have snaps on my system. Of the two, I have chosen Flatpak and am sticking with it.

@itsfoss Good, we need less dominance from Google and M$

@nixCraft This is pretty cool, Arch needs something like this for pacman; ILoveCandy doesn’t come close to this 👀

@itsfoss Any game that has kernel-level anticheat is an automatic no buy from me. Very soon I will have migrated the last of my data to Proton Drive; and then the SSD with Windows on it will be physically removed from my laptop.
If, for some odd reason, I need to use Windows in future; it will be via VirtualBox. I am at a point where I go out of my way to stay on Linux at all times.
