imagine if you had a condition that made you smell like alcohol all the time. it would probably bother a lot of people. you can't help it but the smell is still coming from you. you are the cause of that smell. so no matter if you're doing it on purpose or not, you're still doing it to others and are thus the cause of the problem, and the main person who has to deal with the problem, even if you didn't ask to have it.

@thatguyoverthere i bet they don't have the CDN that YouTube does. i've had issues with videos loading slowly. YouTube collaborates with ISPs like Telenor in Norway to cache videos locally so they'll load fast.

after all, what are you supposed to talk about with your friends if the computer is always telling you what to watch and read?

now that YouTube doesn't offer recommendations anymore unless you enable the Watch History, i'm 100% reliant on recommendations from my friends for new videos and channels to watch. maybe it's better this way. more friends, less algorithm, please.

i don't believe in the idea of personal networks where if you just know a rich person, all your problems will be solved.

i'm a bigger believer in the idea of networks of people in similar situations, and trying to help and support each other.

i grew up in the middle of nowhere, just north of the Arctic circle.

sometimes, people come from afar to seek out the middle of nowhere. often it's people like priests, artists or writers, or others who want to "get away from it all" and are seeking some higher purpose.

having gone in the opposite direction and getting a bit older now, those people are making a little more sense to me.

they're looking for a mystery that doesn't exist though. small towns aren't magical. they have their problems too. there's a reason people leave them.

yes, you can find a simpler and calmer existence in a small town. but let me tell you, it's real easy to get bored.

your quest for deeper meaning isn't shared by the townsfolk, and they won't have any answers for you.

the priests who come to my home town up north usually only stay for a few years. they're used to bigger parishes and it isn't a very stimulating environment for them.

@useless_idiot during the dark months around Christmas, people generally spend a lot of time inside, since there isn't much daylight to do things outside. as it gets closer to spring, people do things like snowmobiling and skiing. in the summers, they go hiking and boating and picking berries and eggs. there is plenty of forest in the lowland areas near the sea but gets more tundra-like when you go inland. the towns in my particular area are post-war and largely car-centred but there are people out and about in the market square in the summertime, when the weather permits.

@useless_idiot this is what a lot of people who move south for career reasons do. they go there to relax and meet family.
