     I think the standard is foreigners paying their $70k and passing an “english assessment” while in china, then coming over and swearing they have at least operational proficiency.

     What happens is that they have only mediocre conversational proficiency, zero technical understanding, and it’s all rote memory. They know the sound of a phrase, and they memorize the response you’re expecting, but not actual understanding. It’s like teaching a dog, or a monkey to fly. More doable than you’d think

     They can’t think on the fly, so when things change up out of the norm they end up landing right into oncoming traffic because to them it’s “i hear old guy say alpha and I turn left”

     Sure, you can have people flying the racetrack just fine, but with even a little bit of altimeter variance you could have 25, 50 feet of heigh difference between two 9’ tall aircraft, plenty of room to spare

     Just know that we’re burning through that buffer a lot, and that’s why stuff like the WIFI adsb crap was mandated, they wanted EVERYONE to have a fishfinder in the panel and that was the only real way to get it installed.

     @Whitewall_Blasphemy @sickburnbro @Boomerman for all their flaws, the boomers knew how to fix shit and keep shit working, and now they're all leaving the workforce. their replacements are ass-kissers or diversity hires. it's not 'deferred maintenance' (bullshit corporate speak), it's so much worse than that. the old career-guys that knew how everything worked are leaving, a lot of places have been 'modernizing' all levels of systems for years (which the old-timers hate because they don't understand the new shit) which usually means over-complicating everything. management isn't bringing up replacements for the old-timers so that those decades of experience can be passed on. instead they promote ass-kissers or bring in diversity hires. in other words, it's not 'deferred maintenance', it's 'nobody knows what maintenance to do, or doesn't give a shit'.
