@Griffith @synapsid I think the dirty little secret here is, after 30 years of deindustrialization, the regime simply doesn’t have the capacity to engage in any widespread domestic manufacturing, at least not on the scale they’d like.
The factories aren’t there, the skilled labor isn’t there, the expertise is in short supply and factory towns are a dying breed. There’s a reason the defense department was frantically securing shells from Egypt of all places to give to Ukraine.

Exactly.
The Abrams tank for example. Western tanks, the Abrams and Chieftan in particular are not designed to be invulnerable, thats impossible of course. They were designed to be as survivable as possible with emphasis placed on CREW survivability. That decision was made because training a crew is far more difficult than building a tank.........provided you have the industrial capacity to replace them at multiple built in a day.
We had that in the 70's when it was designed and built.
Now.....we cant replace the tanks, and the crews cant be replaced either.
Ancestors sad.

@Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid remember reading recently that Raytheon or some other contractor was furiously trying to call engineers out of retirement, since their current staff lacked the institutional knowledge to build one of their most well known missiles (think it was the Minuteman III?).
-
@DW2 @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid Lets not forget that nobody alive remembers how to make the fogbank material, so they had to create a substitute to be able to keep the existing nukes operational. Now, I haven't heard of any nuclear tests recently, so I can only assume that we have no idea whether this new material performs as intended.

@DW2 @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid Different story but same subject:

@BobsonDugnuttHB @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid thing is they're probably not even able to hit that 11K per month quota
-
@DW2 @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid Probably not. That was the target, and they had to scramble this paltry effort just to try to meet it.
-
@BobsonDugnuttHB @DW2 @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid I wonder if a single new machine has been built yet for a munitions production line in the US
running three shifts instead of two is not gonna get the job done
-
@DW2 @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid Most recent story I can find on the plant. Current goal is to hopefully match Russia's 2022 shell production by 2027 lol.

@BobsonDugnuttHB @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid lmao this country is such a fuckin joke
-
@DW2 @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid Thankfully, the more the regime hurts us, the more it hurts itself.
-
@BobsonDugnuttHB @DW2 @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid the cost of "unused production capacity" is a rounding error for even a small defense project. 4 security guards and one part time maintenance guy to come around and oil stuff and look for leaks once a month, pay overtime for a shift to run the machines two weekends a year to find any problems. pay a local contractor for grounds maintenance and plowing
probably $350k a year total after initial outlay and proving
these people are beyond incompetent
-
@deprecated_ii @DW2 @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid I mean, for the perfect storm of regime arrogance and incompetence, witness the fact that the US intentionally provoked a peer war with an industrial power after deindustrializing itself, and then expected the industrial power to be the one to get steamrolled on the battlefield and collapse internally.
There is no amount of blind stupidity that can be surprising after that.
-
@BobsonDugnuttHB @DW2 @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid guess who supplied the majority of the nitrocellulose used in shell production? Ivan and Chan. And neither is exporting to the USA now.
-
@deprecated_ii @BobsonDugnuttHB @DW2 @Grenadier1 @Griffith @synapsid the dirty secret is that they make far more money on limted production runs of boutique high tech hardware. they dont want mass production.
