There crystallizes a path to make a QCM6490 CPU module (with 8GB RAM) for MNT Reform... what do you think? If I'm not mistaken this SoC is also used in the Fairphone 5 so there are some synergies in terms of support. Also (some experts please correct me) this would mean quite up-to-date OpenGL and Vulkan support, could we finally run Blender?
@mntmn Sounds like an intriguing possibility – have you talked to Fairphone? Netherlands is not that far from Berlin I'm thinking :)
Would love for Fairphone, MNT and @frameworkcomputer to be cooperating on modular open setups
Eg. the Framework 16 inch uses a similar setup for the keyboard as MNT does I think? With an onboard RPi Pico chip to handle communication and keyboard logic
@mntmn Oh, but would it be possible to use the included 5G modem, instead of a miniPCI one? Even if just with an eSIM if the SIM slot is hardwired to the WWAN interface?
@gkrnours we do have a prototype of Rack Reform but demand for it seemed very low. we also pitched a multi module ITX board to nlnet for funding but it was rejected. i'm thinking to make a more compact case based on the pocket reform motherboard perhaps.
@mntmn with the multiplication of CPU module, I think some solution to reuse old one would be nice. I'm thinking maybe a rackable enclosure where you can plug like up to 8 modules, providing them with power+network. A cloud in a box.
@mntmn Not sure about that particular SoC, but the SDM845 has full OpenGL and Vulkan support in postmarketOS! Blender runs pretty well on my OnePlus 6T. That chip is newer but if Freedreno supports its variant of the Adreno GPU I see no reason it wouldn't run Blender well. Side note, I really want a Fairphone 5 but they're not sold in the US :( I may have to pay the exorbitant import cost, having a new, modern pmOS supported phone would be excellent.
@as400@mntmn Oh thank you for that info! No kvm is a dealbreaker for me as I use qemu+kvm every day on my a311d reform (and the imx8mq in the past). Should the qcm6490 become part of the reform family, I'd appreciate another row in the table on https://mntre.com/modularity.html which indicates whether the platform can do kvm acceleration or not (in the same way as the table also lists opengl capabilities of the board).
