     I recently started hoarding flacs subscribing to the thought of "Get the highest quality first, then compress it down later if needed". I can barely hear a difference between flacs and 320 kbps mp3 (or even vorbis), but I REALLY can tell the difference as soon as you get to 256 kbps or lower. I actually have an album that says it's 320 kbps and I'm pretty sure someone converted 128 kbps files to 320 kbps and put that online. The sound is just all jacked up.

     I can, but its through a sound card and some "entry level" audiophile headphones. I completely understand if you'd want to save space on music with ogg as long as it still sounds good.

     @Zerglingman i prefer flac for achival purposes, listening i can't really distinguish it from even opus down to 96kbps (depending on genre).

     i bet the bandcamp flacs are also really badly compressed to save on computing power. ~570M is almost a CD.

     @bonifartius So I could try pulling the FLAC and compressing it with ffmpreg and seeing what happens? If I get a notable saving I can just proceed with that? Or would the compression make it bad for listening? Well if it comes down to like 2x the ogg level I can probably handle just having both, and starting a dedicated archive folder.

     I’m also under the impression that over the next year they will tank the entire platform (especially for artists)

     @bronze @Zerglingman I have some chink fi equipment (a portable DAC with amplifiers that works way better than the integrated sound card and a Moondrop KATO which is a mid-range IEM, all connected through some fancy cables and a 2,5mm balanced connector), but I still can't notice. Maybe I'm not "ear trained".
     
     To be fair, it's also been a while since I've last bothered with media file types, so lately I have no idea what format I'm listening to. Let's see if my new project changes it, I want to have a better control of the media I consume.

     i just tested with a FLAC file from bandcamp putting it through "flac -8 -o outfile.flac infile.flac" and it saved about a megabyte, but i think that depends on the kind of music. white noise is badly compressible.

     FLAC is lossless but like for other lossless compression formats you can choose how much the algorithm should try to reduce it. it should never (except if something is badly broken) lose information.

     i just want the ability to convert things to other formats without additional losses, so i try to keep my archive as FLAC, disc space is cheap enough now.

     @lina@eientei.org There are some versions of WAVE that are lossy IIRC, but those are the obscure, weird ones
     
     The common WAVE format including Microsoft's is lossless
     
     Think of it as FLAC decompressed. it's definitely gonna be huge as it's always 1.4 Mbits per second

     @mima @Zerglingman ah, that's good, so it's basically just worse flac from my POV cuz i can't tell the difference between lossy and lossless formats unless the frequencies or the compression are fucked up

     @lina@eientei.org (Btw 1.4 Mbits per sec only applies for the standard CD audio which is stereo 16-bit 44.1khz. May be even larger if it's another encoding like DVD Audio which may have more than two channels and a higher sample rate and bit encoding like 24-bit)

     @lina@eientei.org Yeah pretty much. There's no reason to get the WAV version at all unless you really don't have a player that supports FLAC or ALAC. But even then you could just decode that losslessly compressed audio into wav and play that into your player... :sagume_think:

     @mima @Zerglingman i just listen to mp3 and that's it, also m4a's but that's cuz the torrents i dl'd sometimes had those instead of mp3, seems like it's the same as mp3 but DRM'd somehow by crapple, but i had no trouble playing em so yeah

     @Zerglingman@freespeechextremist.com Maybe they want to play their music into a hardware music player separate from their computer. There are plenty of old players that don't support FLAC but will happily play MP3s and WAVs
