  @Awoo @MK2boogaloo @MCMLXVIIOTG @KillerMule @Hoss @Heil_Honkler I don't consider "D20" to be a system, but rather a family of systems, tied by a single aspect/mechanic.
  And I don't think it's a particularly good aspect. Generally you only need to classify the difficulty of any given task in one of ~5 states, where two of those have no roll associated (auto success, auto fail). You can add more granularity if you want, but I think anything above 8 is too much. A better design for this is building around a sliding window of "challenging" tasks, so you can clearly feel, that as your character grows, things that once posed risk are now so easy you just don't have to try/roll, you just can do them for free.

  I'm willing to GM, but I'm not very good at it - I attempt to simulate a world that doesn't necessarily revolve around the players, and then I take that too far. If we are to start a game I'd look seriously at how to correct that; every time I chat about it I throw another idea around in my head.
  I also want some sort of fedi RPG index, so people can look for games, join games, request players for games, etc.
  I don't think we need a tool for this, maybe a bot or something. Or, and I'm going to blow some minds with this... A tag.

It's about a task's failure state not being catastrophic enough to prevent a retry, eg. looking for secret doors. There's a difference between "I went over the room 5 times before I found it" and "oh it's right there, I could tell from the moment we walked in". I'm not sure that can be properly expressed mechanically other than how much time passes (lol, only 5e group I was in would go sleep for 8 hours after every single fight, time didn't matter to them) and the condition for bypassing the roll. But that's probably good enough. An RPG isn't an RPG by its crunch alone, the GM has to do work to make it a game.

  There was a rollless system going around awhile back. Can't remember what it was called. Focused mostly on the story telling with the stats taking a very backseat roll.
  
  IIRC the basic gist of it was that you pick certain skills/traits for your characters and these came into play. For example if you character was an apprentice blacksmith, you could do all the things expected of an apprentice blacksmith and as you leveled up you got new skills/traits to add or you could level up existing ones.
  
  GM was encouraged to "fumble" a lot for narrative purposes. System relied very heavily on good faith between players and the GM. It was not a system for Chaotic Randoms, min-maxers or people that kept on trying to pull stupid shit.

  Honestly the whole TCG concept bothers me because I so badly want it to be good but I think it just can't be. There is no way to achieve that dream of a player having their own unique style... Unless you write some rules that allow players to effectively add custom cards. You've gotta have *something* that can be broken down to such a degree that you can't predict the results of every possible combination, without it being stupidly OP, and that's hard. But maybe not impossible.

  @Awoo @MK2boogaloo @MCMLXVIIOTG @KillerMule @Hoss @Heil_Honkler Everyone just plays commander now because it fixes a bunch of problems with standard, basically setting dupe limit to 1 and deck min size to 100 makes it much harder to stack your deck into always drawing your winning combo by turn 2.
  But then it also has no rotation so it's stupid again. Rotation sucks for players but it's good for game balance.

  I am really interested to try Engine Heart just for the novelty of it.
  I also want to noodle around with GSGRPG, the end-goal for that is an RPG that can be played in bite-size chunks, basically... But at this point I'm not sure I will be able to call it an RPG, maybe more of a boardgame with some fluff [but I am very proud of how that fluff ends up working back into crunch, I like it almost as much as I like how sat bonus works in Sengoku Rance]. For now, at least, it's very much alpha; I am still trying to figure out how combat should work at all. So it'd be sporadic "who's online let's test xyz".
  I don't mind playing more standard fantasy-type stuff too, PF, SW, etc.
  
  I am willing to GM all of these, with aforementioned caveat.

  For perspective, GM's/DM's developed and kept secret their screens and modified in secret the calculations and roll calcs and mods they made. Its sad how complicated something already complicated got. They just modded the charts they had on a carboard screen to their liking in real time on sheets of paper. Now we allow comps and software to change how we want the game to be played.

But prebuilding a system can save rewriting a lot of baseline work; if you find a system annoying to work with, by all means throw it out. But it's worth at least a try.

  Wouldn't really say I did them on the fly. A bit of work went into some of them. Used to run little simulations to make sure odds didn't end up too out of balance but kept enough variance to keep things interesting.

  @leyonhjelm @MK2boogaloo @MCMLXVIIOTG @Hoss @Heil_Honkler @Awoo @KillerMule This is why I think it's good to give the job of checks to a computer, actually, because you just shove all the players' stats into your machine and then do all the rolls in secret; players don't even have to know when you're rolling.
  The main drawback is that rolling dice is fun, and so doing this denies the players fun.

  I roll dice in secret for effect. Or for real. And the players will never know. I also make players roll and don’t always tell them why. Random WIS or INT that may or may not influence what they’re told or what happens
  The best case scenario is the players feel like they’re in the situation and become more curious. And more in character. Overall, my players have been happy with the results. Only one was angry enough to start a band to play songs about how much he hates me. And the other unhappy player is my brother and he hates me on principle.
