People who park them as a kind of home scuplture of meccanica
and people who go to track days
Everyone else gets tired of it, the discomfort, the lack of utility, it all wears on you after a couple years and you end up w/ something a little more touring-oriented. There’s a sweet spot where they get just a little longer, a little steadier, and a little higher in the bars where you get 90% of the looks and experience while being able to do grocery shopping and commute to work in something other than jeans and a t-shirt

All my sunny day sportbikes and dirtbikes have been sidelined, it’s harder to carve out the time to go play with them. For date night, a sportbike is cool enough, but it’s already a battle getting girls to wear any gear unless it’s a full leather suit.

Too slow for me when I’m already taking on the risk of riding. Had an XR650R streeted early on, about 14 bikes back. I went through a series of dirt bikes before swearing it off, too many times stuck at the mercy of drivers with no control over my fate but slowing down. I grew to demand a lot of extra power to be able to move, lets you determine where you want to be in traffic. Power & mobility. Around here, I think the slowest road for a few miles is 40 mph, by the time you hit a highway most nimble bikes are wheezing at the top of 5th gear.
Not to mention I like being able to commute and leave my shit on the bike when I head inside. So I need a bunch of locking storage, ideally with a comfy backrest for the lady. we don’t have the tight terrain to make the most of a smaller, nimbler bike so I just kept moving up to make the most of our wide open streets. The 690 is pretty rad though, probably the best thumper out of the whole bunch on the market today. I don’t mind the F650gs, but those bimmer motors are just too sedate for me.
I started my biking hobby laughing at boomers for their comfort stuff and ugly pack mules, only to end up chatting with them about the best handlebar mounted cupholders

TalmudTranslator (talmudtranslator@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 27-Aug-2023 12:58:39 JST TalmudTranslator @WashedOutGundamPilot @TornadoOfTerror Dual sports took over in some areas. I don't ride my klr650 anymore though unless its in the middle of nowhere because I refuse to bet my legs maybe not working at 100% anymore for the rest of my life on if some retard is not gonna pull out of mcdonalds and not see me when I'm only going 30mph Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks likes this. -

I used to hike along down south imagining good routes to take, but you can’t really take a good bike with you, you’re just a huge target no matter where you go
Going on a cub makes you invisible the whole way through

BadGames (unsolicited@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 27-Aug-2023 13:09:42 JST BadGames @WashedOutGundamPilot @TalmudTranslator @TornadoOfTerror Somewhat related but there's a madman who rode a c90 bike from Alaska to Argentina. Thought you peeps might like it.

He also did a c90 trip in India which was fascinating to see how much of a shithole that place really is. -

oh no. is this a glimpse of my future?

Unfortunately. Pic related got significantly better after some carb jetting but it really isn't designed for highways.Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks likes this. -
Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks (washedoutgundampilot@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 27-Aug-2023 13:16:06 JST Woggy's Zeonic Frolicks @Rayfield @TalmudTranslator @TornadoOfTerror I just had too many of those “holy shit I gotta get out of here” moments on dirt bikes absolutely redlined just keeping up w/ traffic. I got to the point where I REALLY wanna be able to just bail on any position and gain at least 5 car lengths in 3 seconds at any IRL traffic speed. Mobility is all we have, gotta get as much of it as we can (unless you just stay off of high-speed roads, which isn’t an option for me)
Really depends on your riding though. I’m not much of a danger seeker, even when cycling I prefer sedate, level cross country trail riding to fun downhill stuff. I’m not really curbing my riding style by jumping on a 500 lb v twin. Guys w/ more offroad skill hate it because it hampers their fun. If we had woods, then I’d probably be on that 690, I came close to buying it a few times but I wanted more pavement performance than off-road. Still like looking at them, though.
Problem is, none of what I posted is problem-free. If you want reliability, well, the old carbed thumpers have it in spades. If you wanna futz around with ridiculous electrical problems and mysterious ghosts, go austrian/italian/german. If you wanna do it while going fast, choose the first two.

I have an onramp that merges right into highway traffic with about 100m of space before you’re railed right into traffic. If you stop, you get rear ended, if you’re too slow - rear ended.
Our roads are about a full century of hodgepodge solutions
