@skylar Then, the 40’s lady who “really GETS computers” hits ‘reply’ to tell him he just emailed everyone in the company, telling him to avoid doing that in the future.
Then another “I’m pretty tech savvy” gal shows him how to filter that chain so it doesn’t hit his own inbox anymore
@WashedOutGundamPilot@skylar >Computer, reply to “I’m pretty tech savvy” gal email. >CC all employees distribution list >Yet again, ignore the warning that it contains 150,000 recipients >"Hey you're cute, are you free Friday?" >send email
@Elliptica@skylar I’ve been losing my mind lately because one of the ladies at work has this idea that she’s super insanely tech savvy, to the point I think she’s our IT department, but whenever I talk to her she’s totally lost. I was asking about how you could use a thumb drive to save a distro and boot from it wherever you use it, while retaining your data, and she just gave me a blank stare.
But when it comes to windows I think she’s pretty competent, it’s very bizarre. It’s like she leveled up all her Win knowledge but didn’t put a drop of SP into any other OS.
@SuperSnekFriend@Elliptica@skylar That’s what throws me so much. Like, she’s literally THE “tech support genius” and it’s like she’s from a world where there is nothing BUT windows. I think she knows how to do some stuff with it, she was able to get someone’s janky-ass old laptop running 11 even though it was locked into 10….it’s just so alien to me.
I still haven’t even tried it, I just thought it would be nice to have a bootable drive/clone of my comp to put on a keychain and always have just in case. But whenever I try to save things it reverts back to a clean OS install. Haven’t played with it much, I know there’s a way to do it but I don’t recall it being that tough
@WashedOutGundamPilot@Elliptica@skylar How can a live OS and persistent data settings be concepts lost on her? Why? How? :jahy_what: >she's a woman Ok, but why? :jahy_derp:
One could even encrypt it so when the drive is booted it first asks for a password before proceeding with the liveOS.
I'm not at home, but I can drop some more insights on this because I also did something similar to have an emergency drive on my keychain that will let me grab any PC and just get into my shit.
@WashedOutGundamPilot@Elliptica@SuperSnekFriend@skylar >I was asking about how you could use a thumb drive to save a distro and boot from it wherever you use it, while retaining your data As others have mentioned, the key word is "persistence". I vaguely remember liveUSB creation tools/wizards having checkboxes for it which I never really used back in the day since I only ever used them as live installers. These days I mostly use Ventoy to make that use case easier for multiple .isos, seems like there's a plugin for that which requires a bit of additional configuration and saves to a file rather than a partition https://www.ventoy.net/en/plugin_persistence.html Something like TailsOS might be less messing around to get the defaults you want, as @PunishedD mentioned.
@WashedOutGundamPilot@Elliptica@SuperSnekFriend@skylar >it’s like she’s from a world where there is nothing BUT windows. I've seen many such cases, both individuals and businesses. People don't know what they don't know.
