@p @dcc @Doll @Folklore @Sui @zero Bro, blood orange on black background should've been the real hacker terminal colors. Not lime green. 😤 -

@catmanmancat @dcc @Doll @Folklore @Sui @zero Green CRTs were cheaper; my first display was amber monochrome but it was already old by the time I got it. The Gridcase machines used orange plasma displays, nice looking. As a bonus, the logo for the Gridcase 3 was a penis.

@Koropokkur @dcc @Doll @Folklore @Sui @zero @catmanmancat Apparently not too many of them were made. They were designed for commodity hardware fileservers (think Novell Netware). Real machines spoke RS-232 but typical PC hardware didn't work well headless, and this was a solution. † top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

@zero @Doll @Folklore @Sui Watched the BBS documentary, it was fun times. I think it was maybe jeffcliff that showed it to me; lot of parallels with fedi.
Anyway, near the beginning, there was an old dude and he said that he had thought when 300 baud came out that modems weren't going to need to be faster, since 300 baud is reading speed.
Also there was this guy and I wish he had more screen time:

it was definitely a 9600 baud affair -

no joke we had a trash 80 running our main gate when i worked at a storage facility back in 2006 or so.
we would have to manually turn on accounts that paid if they were previously late and we would have to manually disable gate codes anytime a person went late -

@zero @Doll @Folklore @Sui The regular ones definitely earned the nickname, but the Model 100 is basically indestructible and it's pretty easy to find about a dozen working ones on eBay any given day.
I don't doubt that old-ass machines continue to survive in these weird POS systems, though. Same TRS-80 might still be in that facility. -

@Koropokkur @dcc @Doll @Folklore @Sui @zero @catmanmancat A lot of the fancier servers have little 16x2 character displays on the front. I don't mind just hooking up a serial cable to the back.
The TPi2 that FSE is on now, though, you've gotta plug it into pins on the board, so I have these 9-pin DSub connectors that are solder-friendly that I've been thinking of using to get a connector onto the back but since I only need it when the thing can't get on the network, it's not super useful to do.† top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -
