     I actually decided to take the name subs4social as a pun; I was planning I giving away free subdomains to anons and frens for their own private instances. I gave up that idea, because buying a separate SSL cert for every project idea I had under S4S would be prohibitively expensive.

     @KuteboiCoder @bot @amerika Minus dudeus, just use letsencrypt or any other acme provider that does it for free (assuming they exist). Holders of your subdomain would also be able to provision their own that way.

     but there's definitely close to zero reason to buy a plain ssl certificate

     You should never pay for an ssl cert.
