Why (Bloomed & Unhanced) (why@shitposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 07-Mar-2023 00:32:16 JST Why (Bloomed & Unhanced) NFTs as transferable game objects (weapons skins etc) will destroy any fun in game progression. It seems like it'd be nice to keep your unlocks from one cod to the next year's, but much of the game is in unlocking the new shit. If you start the new game with a million of your own cool skins already, there's no incentive to unlock and use the new ones. -
cool_boy_mew (coolboymew@shitposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 07-Mar-2023 00:32:15 JST cool_boy_mew @why it's why it's never going to happen
30 years old NFT shitters dumbasses literally think you're going to be able to go from game to game, collecting currency and selling it somehow and that it will be balanced in the slightest
None of this shit is going to happen, it's going to be the same ol', but you might have the ability to sell your shit outside the game, making it into an even bigger cancer. Fuck, they might not even let you sell it -
cool_boy_mew (coolboymew@shitposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 07-Mar-2023 00:38:33 JST cool_boy_mew @Moon @why Pretty much. "A couples of special in game skins/whatever are cross promotion" or "bonus in game item if you have x" is basically the best thing you can hope out of that which doesn't make it any less cancerous
So basically, we now have item marketplaces, which has been bad for games
We have battle passes now, which has been bad for games
Imagine the Square Enix shitter CEO's dream come true "Play to earn" as he calls it. Imagine top 10 players in an event (I play some gatchas, you have to spend hundreds to thousands to be #1 in an event, I'm not even kidding) now earning NFTs theoretically worth money. This is going to be a special form of cancer upon games -

Shit tier difficulties like games have these days make this untenable unless you de-level characters back to basics, at which point why bother copying them over? I see same thing for cross-game NFTs.

That's the thing, with NFT they don't have to do any bullshit API, item store, whatever to maintain. They just need to check the item ID from a public database or whatever. 100% easier
But they'd probably still need permission in the end, even if the item connecting as nothing to do with what you get, so we're back to case 1 -

Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Tuesday, 07-Mar-2023 00:46:50 JST Moon @lebronjames75 @coolboymew @why the reason you can do some of these things in nfts and they will never happen without nfts is that nft is a neutral substrate to build on where the game can query assets while otherwise every game company would have to build a custom bridge to every other game company to recognize their stuff. so yes it is possible but it won't ever happen. also nfts can be traded independently of the company that issues them, built in game trading stores completely control who you and what you can buy and they take a huge cut already. if an nft system is implemented (providing it's not gimped in some way) then you get the money from trading an item and the game maker doesn't. this is a strong argument that the nft stuff is actually just a marketing sham because if they implemented it in a real and good way they would lose out big time compared to what they are doing now. cool_boy_mew likes this.cool_boy_mew repeated this. -

Let's take Pripara for an example. Arcade game with cards for costumes. Also ported to Switch
How did they handle every characters being able to wear the same costumes? All characters are the same height and have the same basic body. So that means that the 2x something years old chara has the same body as the 10 years old character. This also means that an anime character that got a song, Chanko, can't be added in the game because she's fat and that would mean reworking 800 to a thousand costume item to make them work with her body
Let's assume it works on the same engine as Overwatch, let's assume it's all NFT with downloadable assets. You have the model problem, the art style problem, the costume fitting problem, etc
It's not simply not happening without the devs outright reworking the item to make it work, and why the fuck would they do that? -

>otherwise every game company would have to build a custom bridge to every other game company
Here's a thing - SteamAPI exists, and there are games on steam that use steam inventory. Euro Truck Simulator 2 could potentially access steam inventory to check if I have a tf2 item to give me a custom paintjob for my truck. There's no need to make custom bridges, steam provides this API already, albeit it's centralized, however virtually nobody does this, even if you want to have a cross-promotion thing where one game has items based on other games it's just easier to add new items into game and give those away via a webpage that would check if you have other game/item. Not only it's technologically easier, it's also easy to understand and convey to user that your tf2 item is also useful in some other game that you might not even have.
Remember - gamers want to game, fun is most important factor, and very, VERY small fraction of gamers also find fun in trading and speculation.

>gamers want to game, fun is most important factor
this + my original point in the OP (nobody FUCKING reads the OP and go off on their own off topic tangent because everyone is fucking RETARDED)
Unlocking things in game is fun
battlepasses are fun because they unlock stuff
>battlepass season 1 has cool red skin
>play game a lot
>unlock red skin
>season 2 rolls around with cool blue skin
>use now exclusive red skin that other players missed out on
>see guy running around with s2 blue skin
>ooh now i wanna unlock that too
this is FUN
>game releases
>hook up NFT key
>downloads all your $9000 monkey jpgs
>play a match
>other players are all running around with their own $9000 skins
>no way to unlock these naturally
>play game a lot to unlock game's cool red skin
>skin's real value: $3
>only poors and kids are using cool red skin
>everyone is using >$5000 skins from 2 games ago
this is NOT FUN -

^I disagree, stuff being tied to battle passes with monthly obligatory plays to do it is effing cancer. It ends up very quickly as an obligation rather than fun for the the sake of it

^ This is already not happening
But as said, putting a monetary earning as a "pay to earn", just like the Square CEO is going on about, to games is going to be really, really bad -

Amikke (amikke@qoto.org)'s status on Tuesday, 07-Mar-2023 01:42:04 JST Amikke @hj @coolboymew @lebronjames75 @Moon @why are you legit proposing we let a single company (Valve) have the final authority over how sharing items and the marketplace works? I know Valve has been pretty chill, but Gaben is gonna die or retire at some point and it’s near certain that over time some asshole is gonna get their hands on Valve and ruin everything for everyone. It would be twice as bad if it was any other company.
The biggest issue with such APIs is precisely that they are owned by an authority that therefore has way, waaay too much power. This, and Valve’s already hefty fees on Steam Marketplace is why Steam’s API isn’t used by many games and in fact it’s in gamers’ interest to keep it that way lest we usher in another gigantic near-monopoly that’s impossible to get out of due to the network effect.
The whole point of blockchain technologies is that they are neutral. Upon creating NFTs, contracts, cryptocurrencies or whatever, the creator releases their direct control over them, without a way to change the rules whenever and however they feel like. It’s a direct upgrade over “traditional” DRM.

it is pure FOMO, but the underlying game is usually balanced and fun. this is more than can be said of every gacha and moba, which seem to only generate stress for absolutely 0 fun.
>already not happening
true, but the NFT idealists want it to.
>"play to earn"
not even a new concept. loot boxes are already out of style, but rare drops like in Diablo/PoE already get sold for real money. only difference here is 1st party exchange -

Yeah and it's about to get even worse
