(having more Chrome/Firefox tabs open on their second monitor and playing some FOTM on their main monitor)-

Someone told me he saw one like it once and it got me on the lookout, now I'm fascinated by these people who should know better than to sit there forever with a sluggish machine...but don't. And I think they're everyone in our parents' generation. They stopped upgrading from whatever they bought in 2012+, waiting for it to totally break down.
The VM guy said "yeah but I like how all my programs are set up now, I don't wanna mess with all that, I don't need it to be fast". Kind of makes sense, he's paid by the hour when he's consulting, I guess?
Fascinating

I've gotten some good loggable time because a survey bird needed the engines running to transfer the data, freeeeee money. Aw shucks it looks like we only got this USB2 cable to copy over 35 gb of data oh well let's watch some k-on while we leave it running

He has an old Mac osx which has discontinued support that he uses for creative stuff, and a Windows 7 machine with barely enough specs to run rpgmaker games. Refuses to buy another computer until they break. Oddly, he also refuses to just download a linux ltsv to regain software support.
Enough of a pain to complain, not enough pain to change.

I'm just about done with linux shit, I don't have the patience for it anymore. Nothing just simply works, it's all a sequence of hunting for boutique apps to get normal things working.
I tried to record audio on it and it didn't sync up with the system clock, so everything was recorded at a variable drift I couldn't even compensate for. At least the big dogs don't screw up THAT badly. Not a fan of systems that require an hour of dry runs before I can count on them to run a task well.
But those old macs absolutely crawl. I don't know how a thinking man can put up with it. If it's normie stuff I'd give something lightweight a shot on it

veff :trash: (veff@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 27-Jul-2024 04:28:58 JST veff :trash: @WashedOutGundamPilot @professionalbigot69 @deprecated_ii linux is like the 90% proof alcohol of the computing world. If you're brain is compiled in bits and bytes, it goes down easy like a Russian sipping vodka. If you're anywhere approaching normal, it physically hurts to consume.
The problem is that everyone thinks "trying" linux means installing it on your existing hard drive and going total immersion. It's really more like that thing you throw on an old computer for a very specific purpose like video editing.

The guys immersed in the subculture cannot understand why normies don't have the inclination to fiddle with it in order to get a perfect experience.
Like gearheads who can't imagine wanting to commute in a prius.

If his computer continued to work, he'd have continued to use it.
