     Douchey but he’s right in that a lot of people quote fantastic levels of pay for jobs that don’t give them enough work to make that level.

     “It’s a hundred fifty k a year!!!!” they’ll say, but that’s based on a pay rate of making 50 widgets per day….and the company only lets you make 14.

     Most of my friends left school in year 10, did 1 month to 1 year of trade school and immediately got an apprenticeship in whatever they wanted. The only one that isn't making bank is the one who kept showing up to work high and hungover, then lost his fingers for it. He's a pest exterminator or something now, idk, stopped talking to him a long time ago.

     There's a really complex dance going on. In 2021/2022, people just needed workers. Signs were up saying they'd get sign-on bonuses and get paid $14 or $16 .. but at the same time, they needed to keep workers who were getting $11/$12 before Scamdemic-flation.
     
     You hire someone for $15 just to fill a spot and all your $11 are like "Why are they getting $4/more when I've been loyal." So they leave. A lot of these owners can't afford to hire someone else at that price, so they gotta squeeze people for more hours. People who leave quickly find out that $15 at the new place ... also are asked to work 50~60 hours/week. They need the money, because inflation is insane. (hence this is why you have that screenshot of the person getting fired for discussing income ... shitty, but that's why).
     
     In the small town I lived in last year, I knew gas station owners who were working 80+ hours a week because they couldn't find staff they could afford. Remember: low unemployment is really good for workers. Smaller pool meaning shops need to pay a good price. But with the jumbled up scamdemic+inflation, you have a weird people shuffle that kept driving up wages .. wages a lot of shop owners couldn't actually afford (because unemployment was actually high), leaving them understaffed and just picking up the work themselves to keep the business afloat until they could afford workers again.
     
     They cycle is just gonna get worse, because the current market isn't remotely natural. It's been propped up by printing money, reducing limits to unemployment and devaluation across the board. Now Former Vice President Biden has hired a small army of IRS agents and dropped the hobby income ceiling from $10k all the way down to $600, and wants everyone from Venmo, Cashapp and PayPal to report the same crap Square and Credit Card processors report! His handlers make him say he's going after the rich, but really this is part one of individual social credit scores (use more cash and Craigslist kids!)
     
     Anecdotal: my HVAC just went out a month ago. I got a tech recommended by a friend (actually a high school classmate's dad). HVAC was almost 20 yeas old and had holes in the heat ex changer, but I was able to get a replacement that week and he had a crew of three for the install. They were fast, and also seemed to have other jobs lined up. 🤷♂️

     I got a job in a bookshop, while I told them "I'll be here for 2 months anyway, before I get my dream job"... Well, it took 2 years, so they had more of the "over qualified labor" then they could wish for.

     But more importantly, the boss told me: Yeah, this isn't a place where you should try to build a career. I get it.

     One place I worked at bragged about the full time benefits you could earn simply by working [X] hours per week for [X] weeks. Sounds easy enough, and I don't mind working. Only to have supervisors cut back on your hours whenever you got close, just enough to keep it out of reach.

     The only reliable way around it is to network…..and thanks to a lifetime of OUR parents moving for careers and living in isolated suburbia, our own cloistered, weird upbringing

     -(can’t play outside or talk to strangers bc dateline said everyone’s a pedo so stay inside with your 1-2 friends playing video games, I had so many people bug me as a kid because they though I was unsafe just riding my bike around town alone) -

     it’s hard to just magically stumble into making a viable working network to find good jobs.

     After having him scream in my face that I wasn't working anyway, which was patiently absurd, I went home, called my boss, who was a nice guy, and said I was going back to retail.
     
     Can't get a date if I tried, but I have my own room in an apartment, I go home on time and I mostly get to work by myself.

FWIW people do like a prodigal son, if you’re earnest and likable then you just might find someone who gives you the ONE shot you need to turn things around. You could go from nothing looking up at all, only to start a new job because you started cracking jokes with a dude at the tire shop - before you know it you’re working for him when another dude says he wished he could hire more people like you, and a few years after that one of your friends from that job calls and asks if you want a job now that he’s management there.

     Dudes help each other out, most of our success today is predicated entirely on the quality, and quantity of the dudes we know.

     For those of you not in the know about aviation, it means you need 1500 hours of flight time before airlines will hire you. It used to be the case, and still is in Europe that 200-400 hours would be enough. Which is all a good novice pilot needs to get started.
     
     And people wonder why there’s a pilot shortage. That rule isn’t the only reason but it has certainly been one of the worst things to happen to the industry in the last 15 years or so.
