   For whatever faults she had in this marriage I’m leaning towards the husband being mostly at fault. I know everything thinks the womenfolk are the worse ones, but I do see some terribly poor performers in the husband role. Guys get selfish, and burned out, and tired, and they begin retracting all their energy from their wife and children, and it begets a cycle where every party begins to sour on each other and dissolve the bonds over time.

   Guys will complain about the quality of their family but never realize their kids are always saying “dad’s never in a good mood“ when they hear him opening the garage door.

     If you’re lucky enough to be in a relationship, take a page from my book and periodically refresh your excitement for your lady. If you’re dating someone, savor it and remember the sensations, attach songs, and smells, and atmospheres to that era so years later you can put on a song, she can spritz her old perfume and feel like you’re a young couple in love all over again.

     Ever bought your dream car and held on to the dealer brochure? Ever pulled it off the shelf and looked back at it to remember how excited you used to be to buy that 140,000-miler you have parked outside? Same thing.

     I’m hoping I’ll never lose that enthusiasm. Maybe it’s a health thing for some, where they get fat and unwell, and lose that vital drive of a man. Scary to think you could just end up a totally different person

     @Robert_Edwardly I get it if you’re the only guy working. You’re the economic engine, it’s easy to feel like you deserve a low-maintenance, self-resolving family. We just don’t have that luxury, they’re wives and children, not men.

     In fairness he didn't want to either and did a much better job than his dad. But as far as parenting goes doing better than a guy who dished out literal beatings to his kids on a regular basis is a pretty low bar to cross.

     @Hoss @WashedOutGundamPilot I feared my dad for years because my mom would never do any of the discipline herself. "Wait til your father gets home!", hear the garage door open, go hide, dad comes home, mom explains, I get called in, get whipped (usually deservedly), pissed off the rest of the night, lather rinse repeat until I was around 10.
     
     Mom rarely if ever did any of the dirty work herself and it was complete fucking bullshit that nearly wrecked my relationship with my father. Many such cases.

     @sparky @Hoss It’s a hard dynamic because I think dad does need to be the disciplinary backstop. Mom’s the advocate, the public defender to help reign him in if he gets too grumpy. I think I’m gonna do labor instead of smacking, for my kids. The pain is useful only in tiny portions, more a demonstration of force than anything - but knowing you got 10 hours of digging out fenceposts and rebuilding the back 100 will teach a lesson for sure

     Dad's not stupid, I assume he figured it out and eventually forced a stop to it. Should ask him next time he's in town

     if you’re not doing it with at least some love in your heart, go calm down

     the proper mindset is one of “mildly amused, laughingly wrathful mastery”; you are the man who is not putting up with any of this shit, and you are simply handing out rewards (ass-paddlings) in exchange for shenanigans, capable of doing that forever, or until the kid gets tired of it and decides to shape the fuck up

     your kids absolutely need their asses whupped from time to time; I am convinced this is of critical importance to the development of normal brain processes, specifically the development of the amygdala, and refusing to do it is properly Biblically described as the manifestation of hatred for your child

     nothing communicates to the kid how much the world does NOT revolve around them, and how much they are NOT in charge of anything, more then being unceremoniously draped over Dad’s knee and having their ass paddled good and hard; observe the ubiquitous dysfunction around you in people that never got their ass paddled to correct their unwanted behaviors to something closer to human

     @VaxxSabbath @sparky @Hoss They need to at least get it a couple times to teach that fear response, to know an authority figure can cause visceral fear/pain. The move away from corporal punishment in schools and homes is why unruly niglets will thumb their nose at cops thinking they can act the same way their school & home authorities tolerate - only to find the cops actually DO use pain-based punishment

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @sparky @Hoss they seem to need it periodically (kinda like women); running open-loop, their calibrations drift over time, causing them to think that things are “horribly intolerable” that aren’t

     kids throw tantrums because they interpret something in their environment as being intolerable in some way, and react (in that sense) rationally to that state of affairs: throw a fit

     if you hand the kid a stern ass-whupping for throwing a fit, then, he realizes: “oh, not having a toy isn’t all that bad, actually”; he has recailbrated his worldview, returning to the understanding that “not getting the thing I instantly want” is not nearly as bad as “having a really sore ass with even more punishment heaped on top if I keep this shit up”

     result: the kid behaves better

     @WashedOutGundamPilot @rightwingsjw @sparky @Hoss it’ll be slightly more than that; the best set of circumstances for triggering this is 1. harming yourself (in any way that is not 100% random happenstance; “not following instructions” or “not using your head to reasonably foresee a dangerous situation” is not included here), 2. harming someone else (same), or 3. disobedience (of any type; this is situational, and usually isn’t used first for this, but it’s ALWAYS “on the table”)
