    Just got an Epson pc-486gr+ (that actually works). This is a NEC PC-9801 clone from 1992-93 (namely based on the vx so it has the egc) with a 486sx 25mhz cpu, 1mb ram, a bunch of Epson Asics to implement the pc98 chipset, a ym2203 sound chip, and a special scsi cage port on the motherboard.

    Fun fact NEC sued Epson and while Epson iirc had to pay NEC because the old roms used in the first clone that wasn't released (due to the suit) were a bit too close to NECs, the PC-286 model 0 had a clean room reversed rom and this would go on to be what later clones by Epson were based on. The terms of the settlement clearly weren't too in favor of NEC because NEC coded in a lockout on their dos versions (that was usually patched) to only work on NEC machines. Eventually dos 6.2 dropped the Epson check, likely due to declining pc98 market share.

    Interestingly this Epson has the high res board for the infamous pc98 high res mode. Also Epson machines were the only pc98 machines with a true turbo switch, NEC never implemented this and you had to either change it in bios or reset the machine to change the speed. On Epsons you can change the cpu speed instantly, just like with a turbo switch.
