@WashedOutGundamPilot @SapientPearwood @Turkleton Use a $3 thermistor, a $5 relay and a 10¢ replaceable fuse to protect the motor and it will keep working for years without issue until the brushes need replacing (for a few dollars).

Instead, we have a $70 "sacrificial" gear assembly.

The industrial base has been destroyed. It would be a massive price increase because it would require expanding CNC capacity instead of using existing, but idle, capacity. CNC machine tools are not cheap.

I was having a similar conversation with the garage door repairman last week. The drive gears for the lift motors are all plastic, so they shred the gears. Wouldn't be a problem if the gears were made of metal, but that would increase the price significantly, since the gears would have to be machined instead of injection molded.

When I can go to the hardware store and purchase things dimensioned with nice round metric numbers and not have to deal with things like 38.1mm x 88.9 mm x 2.438 m, I'll use metric.

Until then, I'll keep working in terms of 2x4x8 lumber.
