It's not like either one of these movies is one of those slow burn movies where this very well made but not very well known movie slowly builds up steam. They're both part of the establishment Hollywood system, with massive marketing budgets behind them... -

Both real estate and debt aren't real markets, so they just keep doing things to raise the prices to make boomers feel rich and keep vooting, and all that means is future generations are stuck borrowing a career worth of cash (1 million in Toronto, 2.5 million in vancouver for a Single Family Home, but 800,000 canada-wide at the peak around 2020) just to have a place to lay your head at the end of the day. -
sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Sunday, 06-Aug-2023 03:33:50 JST sj_zero Housing is one of those things where I think you shouldn't treat it like a financial investment. Practically it has been, but I think morally it shouldn't be.
Morally speaking, unlike most things it's actually a zero-sum game. If your house goes up in price, then that just increased the cost of living for the next person who buys it (and probably for you too if you intend to live somewhere after you sell it). It also increases rents -- Not because of the fallacious economic reasoning that says prices are a direct function of the cost to produce a thing, but because the landlords who aren't raising prices ultimately get run out of town by the ones who are. -

It seems that as you go that far back and you apply postmodern views to enlightenment era events, you end up with a lens distorted by the events that came since. -

I won't speak for anywhere else, but Toronto and Vancouver are about as "livable" as the surface of the sun.
A single family home in Vancouver is over 2 million dollars and in Toronto is over 1 million dollars for starters. Then there's the homeless, crime, and drug problems. Many people in the Toronto area have a multi-hour commute.
But really the first thing should do it for you. "Much livable! Many wow! 4500/mo mortgage ftw!" -

These big companies are dangerous. One difference is that this time we know they're dangerous. Many of us specifically left their services because we viscerally understand they're dangerous. -

sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Saturday, 17-Jun-2023 03:52:59 JST sj_zero One of the benefits of the distributed nature of the fediverse is that different instances have different standards and so nobody needs the one universal standard to fit them perfectly. Some instances are locked down and while I don't agree with it, that's their freedom to do so and it's mine to moderate as lightly as I do. We can coexist in the same fediverse, even if that fediverse looks a lot different. -
sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Saturday, 17-Jun-2023 03:52:07 JST sj_zero I'm not your dad -- it isn't my job to make sure you're not a jerk. I'm not going to stick my fingers into discussions. I grew up with no holds barred internet debate, it's halal.
You're not mine -- Don't break my toys. Most moderation actions I've ever taken are based on systemic risks such as spam or CP, because I don't want my toys broken.
Honestly, I had some reports about one of my users being mean to someone I like, and that's when I had to decide what to do about it. The only answer I could come up with was to say "If they're bothering you, block them". It's dangerous for me to start intervening in arguments like someone's dad. -

sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Thursday, 15-Jun-2023 00:44:10 JST sj_zero The first time that their vehicle is out of control, most people make the mistake of trying to slam the steering wheel in the opposite direction to correct things. Doing so only makes the loss of control worse. What you end up wanting to do is straighten up your wheels relative to the road so at the very least your front wheels regain traction.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not 100% sure how that analogy applies to economics and Central banking. It certainly seems like it warns us against taking extreme measures just because something bad is happening in the moment. -

sj_zero (sj_zero@social.fbxl.net)'s status on Friday, 09-Jun-2023 14:42:12 JST sj_zero There's an entire genre of stories kinda like that. Often it's an otome fan who knows she's reincarnated as the villain because she doesn't want to be the villain and is fighting to avoid all the bad things that will happen, but I'm pretty sure there's some where she's the protagonist but all the endings to the game suck so she's trying to do something completely different.
