23 characters was the original length of links generated by Twitter's link shortener.

I think the idea was to emphasise that such shorteners are unnecessary on here.

That's a problem on here unfortunately :blobsad:

I'd suggest putting a space in and adding a note afterwards telling people to remove the space after the @.

Alternatively you can ignore the suggestions and hope that the @ doesn't match an actual user's account in which case it won't resolve into a tag. However, sooner or later you may match, so a space is safer.

Yeah, would recommend that. Or use the official app if you prefer.

Main thing is to avoid apps that aren't being maintained, because unmaintained apps can cause problems.

The lead developer of Metatext had to take a break for health reasons so its development stopped.

However, there's a community effort to continue it under a new name, Feditext. Feditext isn't ready yet but you can follow its progress at @Feditext

As Megalodon is a fork of the official app, perhaps they can integrate the official app's Lists support?

Yeah, the third-party ones seem to have a lot more options and faster pace of development.

There wasn't even an official app until last year, it was only added because so many new people expected there to be one.

Historically Mastodon has relied on third-party apps, and as it's an open platform the third-party apps have just as much access to Mastodon's features. The official apps don't have any kind of special privileges.

Would strongly recommend trying third-party apps 👍

In case you missed it, the official Mastodon Android app has been updated to include hashtag following and Mastodon's Lists feature! 🎉

The latest version of the app is v2.2.0.

Also, a reminder that you don't need to use the official app at all, you can get most features a lot sooner on third-party apps (e.g. Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Subway Tooter etc).

Third-party apps for all platforms are listed on Mastodon's official site at https://joinmastodon.org/apps (scroll down past the official app).
