I still have a nonfree-free ISO. Nonfree is only helpful to end users who need the firmware (for DVD/BD/Radeon etc). But I am running nonfree-free, headless Debian on 3/4 of my servers, and everything works as it should.
Last year, I had a talk with a fellow user about how their kernel update broke their ZFS and they felt I was blaming the license. I specifically said that the inclusion of nonfree firmware almost always results in undesirable behavior in an environment not meant to accomodate it. -

It does exactly what you say, but it also destroys discoverability. So you'll need to decide if the need to regulate how your content is fetched and stored outweighs visibility.
I would suggest turning it on, as some people don't know how to stop scraping. -
